Brian's Briefing for May 23: Memorial Day events this weekend, community updates, and better access to the GED

Dear Neighbors,

As you head into your Memorial Day Weekend, take a moment to remember the heroes who lost their lives protecting our nation and our democracy. The soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen of our time who never returned home are the very reason we’re able to celebrate with parades and backyard barbecues. Without their sacrifice, America wouldn’t be what it is today.

Enjoy your time with family, friends, and neighbors this weekend, and reflect on ways you can help support members of the armed forces the way these heroes supported you. Some good ideas are volunteering with your local American Legion or VFW Post, donating to a local charity that helps homeless veterans, and helping younger kids understand what it means to be a soldier.

On Monday, come honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom at the Warminster VFW Post 6493 and Warminster Township annual Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade! A ceremony will be held at the Warminster Township Administration Building beginning at 10 a.m. The parade will immediately follow, at approximately 11 a.m. It will start at the Administration Building, follow Henry Avenue to York Road; York Road to Street Road; and Street Road to Louis Drive, where it will end at the VFW building on Louis Drive.  Refreshments will be available at the VFW following the parade.

Office Closure for Memorial Day Weekend

My offices are closed all day today, Friday, May 23 and Monday, May 26 in observance of the holiday. We look forward to helping you after the break.

Please, Practice Firework Safety!

Did you know that sparklers burn at 2,000 degrees? This Memorial Day Weekend, practice firework safety to prevent injury – in 2002, fireworks started over 31,000 fires and caused $109 million in property damage. Learn more about how to safely celebrate with fireworks from the Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner.

Learning More About Our Community’s Culture

I love the chance to learn more about the people of our legislative district. This week, the Warrington BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir welcomed me to their event focused on Unity begins Within. I was honored to participate in their program and to meet some of our Hindu community members. A Mandir is a sacred Hindu place of worship, and many, like our local one, are centers for prayer, community, and cultural exchange. Thank you for having me!

Welcome to Willow Grove, Pet Doc Urgent Care!

Willow Grove is now friendlier than ever for our furry friends – Pet Doc Urgent Care recently opened its doors at 2717 Easton Road! I had the honor of attending their ribbon cutting ceremony and meeting Dr. Pooja Patel. When your pet needs care, be sure to check out this local, family-owned business.

Now, Better Access to GED

The Pennsylvania Department of Education announced that high school equivalency exams such as the HiSET and GED tests are now available to eligible Pennsylvanians free of charge. The coverage is on a first-come, first-served basis, so take advantage of it now!
