Brian's Briefing for May 9: Remembering our fallen officers, mental health month, and tax updates to know about.

Dear Neighbors,

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and as we close out a busy week in Harrisburg, I ask you to take a moment to check in with yourself, your family members, and your neighbors. Life can get stressful, and it can be hard for some people to ask for help when they need it most. If you find that someone you love needs assistance, visit the Bucks County Mental Health Services website for resources that can help, or call 988 for the Crisis Lifeline.

In this update, you’ll find more details on:

  • The annual PA State FOP Memorial Service
  • Funding for Bucks County Head Start and Early Head Start
  • The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program deadline extension
  • The Working Pennsylvanians Tax Credit
  • Upcoming events

Remembering Fallen Heroes in Harrisburg

Tuesday night, I attended the Pennsylvania State Fraternal Order of Police’s annual memorial service for officers lost in the line of duty in the Capitol Rotunda. We remembered Sgt. Jaime Junior Roman, a Philadelphia Police Officer who died as the result of gunshot wounds he sustained at a routine traffic stop in 2024, along with other officers who lost their lives on the job.

As chair of the PA House Law Enforcement Caucus and as a former police officer myself, the lives and safety of our law enforcement officers are always on my mind. Each year’s memorial service is a solemn but important event, and I thank all involved in organizing it to keep the memories of these fallen heroes alive.

Announcement: Federal Funding for

Bucks County Intermediate Unit Continues

Update: The Bucks County Intermediate Unit, the educational services agency that runs our Federally-funded Head Start and Early Head Start programs, received notice that they will continue to receive funding through June 30. Though the funding is short-term, it means the programs will be able to operate long enough to complete the current academic year. Head Start previously received a five-year grant in 2020. They have applied for another five-year grant and are waiting to hear a decision. I am hopeful that we’ll continue to see Federal funding for these important programs.

Working Pennsylvanians Tax Credit

This week the House of Representatives passed the Working Pennsylvanians Tax Credit; an earned income tax credit that would increase the amount of money you get back based on your federal earned income tax credit. Anyone who qualifies for and claims the federal EITC will automatically receive a state tax credit worth 30% of their federal credit. You can read more about the bill here.

Now that the bill has passed the House, it goes to the state Senate for further consideration.
