After local student athlete death, Scott to host free student heart screening

HARRISBURG, Aug. 22 – State Rep. Greg Scott along with Simon’s Heart, Jefferson Health and the Norristown Area School District are hosting a free student athlete heart screening after the local deaths of five student athletes due to sudden cardiac arrest. To call attention to the importance of screening for sudden cardiac arrest, Scott will hold a free Community Heart Health Screening event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 23 on the Roosevelt Campus of Norristown Area High School. The event is intended for kids aged 14-25 and will offer heart screenings, blood pressure screening, stroke education, flu shots and more. Students can also have their PIAA physical completed for the 2023-24 school year at the event. Pre-registration is required. Scott will discuss the benefits of heart screening and his new legislation promoting it during a news conference at an in-person pre-registration event 5 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Roosevelt Campus of the Norristown Area High School. Pre-registration can also be completed online here . Congress seeks to spend more than $100 million to rid ‘forever chemicals’ from firefighters’ protective gear

My legislation would require any manufacturer of firefighters’ jackets, pants, helmets, and respiratory equipment to include warning labels on products that contain PFOS or PFOA, two types of forever chemicals, and explain why the gear contains the chemicals. Read more

Scott releases statement on PA state budget

HARRISBURG, July 6 – State Rep. Greg Scott, D- Montgomery, issued the following statement regarding his vote to support the 2023-24 state budget that will head to the desk of Gov. Josh Shapiro. “We have passed a significant investment in K-12 education funding, which will help to provide relief to our underfunded schools,” Scott said. “I’m happy that our school districts will see a boost from the budget’s $617 million increase for Pennsylvania’s 500 school districts. We have the money to help our students succeed, regardless of where they live, and they are worth the investment.” Scott said state funding for the school districts he represents are set at the following amounts: Colonial Area School District - $7,039,010 (8.5% increase). Norristown School District - $31,953,809 (18.5% increase). “This bill will invest significant money in the recently minted Whole Home Repair Program, in solving the Black maternal health crisis, in uplifting historically disadvantaged small businesses, in sickle cell research, in the Pennsylvania Prison Society, in establishing the Indigent Defense Advisory Committee and in overall violence intervention and prevention programs.” Scott said. “The budget is not perfect; they never are, but it does make significant investments in the state’s most important resource: people.
