Testifiers, lawmakers maintain push for minimum wage increase

(Mar 06, 2024)

PHILADELPHIA, March 6 – The House Majority Policy Committee gathered testimony from minimum wage earners and public policy experts during a hearing Wednesday as the push to finally increase the wage in Pennsylvania continues. The hearing was hosted by Rep. Roni Green (D-Phila.) at SEIU Local 668 in Philadelphia. It comes after House Democrats passed legislation in June that would increase the state’s minimum wage to $15 by 2026. However, that bill is still awaiting action in the GOP-controlled Senate. “Raising the minimum wage in Pennsylvania is an important and timely topic. It has the potential to improve the lives of many with a fair and livable income,” Green said. “Increasing the minimum wage will reduce poverty, promote economic growth, and provide a financial sense of security for workers. It’s unacceptable that we haven’t raised the wage in 16 years.” Wednesday’s policy hearing featured testimony from Bri Golphin, an employee at the Restaurant Opportunities Center ; Karim Jones, a home healthcare worker for SEIU Healthcare PA ; and Marc Stier, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Policy Center . Jones is a full-time caregiver for his brother, who began needing assistance three years ago. Jones said the training offered by SEIU Healthcare PA has greatly impacted the quality of care he’s able to provide. But because of low wages, Jones testified that he supplements his income Read more

Josh Shapiro and the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency following the inaugural meeting of Indigent Defense Advisory Committee Monday. The Indigent Defense Advisory Committee will develop statewide standards and a statewide funding system for indigent defense services -- providing legal representation for those who cannot afford it on their own. “Last week we heard from Governor Shapiro as he proposed his 2024-25 budget . His plan for this budget builds on the $7.5 million investment in indigent defense, the first time in state history that funding was secured to guarantee public defenders with the necessary resources to provide legal representation to defendants who cannot afford it themselves” said Scott, D-Montgomery. “In the community where I live, we have people who have systematically not had a fair shake in our criminal justice system. As a magisterial district judge, I was proud to have helped see to the creation of Montgomery County’s Pre-Trial Service program, which guarantees that everyone has an attorney at the time of their arrest, and now, as a state representative, I am happy to help make sure they can pay for it. Having an attorney represent you is a constitutional right, not just in some states but in all states, and it’s time we do our part to make that a reality.” The Read more
