State Rep. Jared Solomon, D-Phila., presented a $15,000 check to the students and teachers at Settlement Music School. “These programs work to draw out the passion that the students have. They can serve as a spark to help kids identify their interests, talents, and potential career options. This shows kids that we care,” Solomon said. “This is part of a long-term effort to bring in more programs for youth. My office brought Legacy Tennis, We Love Futbal at Max Myers, and Boys and Girls Club at various schools. I am actively working on getting the PAL center open on Rising Sun. We have made good steps, but this is only the beginning. We need to do more.” The funding was used to purchase instruments to establish the new drum program through Settlement Music School at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, according to Solomon. “We are so excited to have this program here. These enrichment programs are extremely important and valuable not only for the students, but also to our community,” Woodrow Wilson Elementary School Principal Dr. Shawn McGuidan said. “Wilson is a diverse school, and we like to have as many opportunities as possible so that our students are able to have varied experiences that they would not otherwise have if they did not attend our school. We are proud of the program, and we are hoping to increase it next year. Thank you, Representative Solomon, for making this possible.” Read more

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 14 – State Rep. Jared Solomon, D-Phila., presented a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to Christina Lu, a student at Central High School, for her outstanding efforts to stop Asian hate. Lu was traveling on SEPTA’s Broad Street Line in November when she noticed a group of young Asian American students being physically and verbally assaulted by four other students. Lu heroically intervened and was overcome by the perpetrators while her fellow students tried their hardest to protect her. “Everyone has been calling me a hero, but I really am not. I’m just an ordinary girl from an ordinary family who saw people in need of help, and so I tried to help,” Lu said. “I’ll continue to stand up against bullying and violence and help people in need.” Since then, Lu has used her voice to speak out against hatred and discrimination. She spoke at a Stop Asian Hate event and called for better public safety measures on SEPTA. The slogan “Stop Asian Hate” is being used all around the world to show solidarity with the Asian community. “Christina showed bravery in a dangerous situation, and it only empowered her to do more to stop Asian hate.” Solomon said. “I am proud to award Christina for taking care of our community.” The citation reads in part, “The House of Representatives joins with citizens across the state to Read more

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 22 – On the heels of the conviction of Councilmember Bobby Hennon and labor leader John Doughtery on federal corruption charges, state Rep. Jared Solomon, D-Phila., said he is introducing a bill proposing to amend Pennsylvania’s constitution to require elected officials to resign upon being convicted of a crime. Solomon said that once they are convicted of crimes, public officials lose their credibility, integrity and cannot serve their constituents without the idea of bias and corruption overshadowing any significant decisions they make. He said his legislation would be a start to putting politics back into the hands of the people. “The negative publicity of a conviction minimizes the work we do as public servants and creates a lack of trust from the people we serve,” Solomon said. “My legislation seeks to re-establish that trust.” “As elected public servants, we have a responsibility to represent our constituents and promote the general welfare of our districts with honor. Every elected officer, from a city councilmember to the governor, must make a similar promise to serve faithfully and carry out the responsibilities of their office with integrity.” Read more
