At a Capitol news conference today, state Reps. Jared Solomon and Jordan Harris and other colleagues announced the creation of the Black-Jewish Caucus. The caucus’ goal is to explore the historic relationship between the two groups, reignite the current relationship, and work together to promote social justice. “Black and Jewish people have come together since the Civil Rights movement to work together for equity and social justice,” Solomon said. “We are here to revitalize this relationship to take on the challenges of today. HARRISBURG, March 6 – As more states place restrictions on or ban abortions outright, state Rep. Jared Solomon, D-Phila., has introduced legislation to preserve a woman’s right to choose in Pennsylvania. “No one should be denied the right to reproductive health care,” Solomon said. “The overturning of Roe v. Wade has left woman’s health care in peril; this legislation would seek to protect that right.” Solomon explained that the current Supreme Court’s decision to undo the 1973 Roe v. Wade precedent has had far-reaching consequences. Some of the resulting restrictions on the drug methotrexate – which can be used for medically assisted abortions – have also limited its use therapeutically for many other conditions. Solomon’s legislation would provide a framework to defend abortion rights and work with neighboring states to prevent investigations of reproductive health care services, disclosure of records, and negative licensing actions. “Under this legislation, Pennsylvania would be taking the ultimate steps in protecting women and preserving their right to choose health care that is right for them,” Solomon said. “Because that choice belongs between a woman and her doctor.” Read more

Malcolm Kenyatta, also D-Phila., to introduce a constitutional amendment that would require elected officials to resign upon conviction of a felony. “As public servants, we must be held to the highest of standards,” Solomon said. “The people we serve deserve elected officials they can rely on and have faith in -- they lose all of that once the individual is convicted of a crime.” Solomon said that the publicity created from these often high profile cases steers attention away from serving the public. “As elected officials, we owe the constituents that we represent service that improves their quality of life,” Kenyatta said. “They put their trust in us and deserve to be represented by honorable, law-abiding officials committed to doing just that.” Under current case law, an elected official does not have to resign until they are formally sentenced.
