Shusterman to introduce long-term solution to SEPTA funding crisis

PAOLI, Aug. 15 – State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, D-Chester, announced that she plans on introducing legislation that would establish indexed categories of counties for state tax collection and funding.

Shusterman said that under the proposal, each of the three economic categories of the Commonwealth would keep its share of all collected taxes to fund its schools, medical facilities, law enforcement, parks and recreational areas, transportation infrastructures including roads and bridges, and other essential line items that are currently appropriated through the state budget.

“I believe the current system for collecting state income, property, sales and corporate taxes does not do enough to provide financial stability at the local level,” Shusterman said. “We need a different approach to address the constant funding disparities in our communities and help residents see the direct impacts of their hard-earned tax dollars. I have been listening to my Republican colleagues for years. I understand they do not want to invest in Southeastern PA, so this is a solution that honors those goals, whereby each region funds their own schools, roads, police and other projects.”

Shusterman said she plans to introduce the bill formally in the coming weeks.
