Steele, state police to host community forum on protestor rights and interacting with law enforcement

HARRISBURG, April 16 — To help increase understanding of protestors’ First Amendment rights and interactions with law enforcement, state Rep. Mandy Steele, D-Allegheny, is partnering with Pennsylvania State Police to host a Community Dialogue on Rights and Law Enforcement.

The forum will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Cooper-Siegel Community Library, 403 Fox Chapel Rd., Fox Chapel.

A state police community ambassador will provide an informative video presentation and lead a question-and-answer session on a range of topics related to interactions between citizens and law enforcement. The presentation is part of a state police program called Building Bridges.

“These are timely issues, and I’m grateful that the state police can help increase our understanding of them,” Steele said. “Our First Amendment rights are precious, and it’s important that anyone who chooses to exercise them understand the best way to do that to balance those rights with community safety.”

"As law enforcement, our top priority is public safety. A key part of fulfilling our mission is maintaining a positive relationship and building trust within the communities we serve,” said Trooper Joseph B. Dunsmore of the state police Office of Community Engagement and creator of the Building Bridges presentation. “Our program strives to do just that by providing community members of all ages with the opportunity to ask questions, express opinions, share ideas and learn the truths about policing. Through education and open dialogue, we can dispel misconceptions, address concerns and connect with the public on a more personal level.”
