Proud to support workers on the issues that matter

As Labor Day approaches, I’m proud to say that my House colleagues and I have been fighting for PA workers on the issues that really matter. Here’s a sampling of bills we’ve advanced:

A higher minimum wage of $15 per hour by 2029.
Paid family and medical leave for PA workers.
Unemployment compensation for striking workers in PA.
OSHA standards for Pennsylvania’s public workers.
Requirements aimed at preventing workplace violence in the healthcare sector.

I’ve also supported recent state budgets that help eligible working families keep more of what they earn and make significant investments in workforce training, apprenticeships, and career pathways.

I greatly appreciate the contributions that all of our workers make to our communities and economy. You deserve respect and recognition for your hard work and I hope you’re able to take the day to relax and recharge this Labor Day.

My Senior Fair is coming up soon

I’m looking forward to my annual Senior Fair on Friday, Sept. 25. It will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Allegheny Valley Volunteer Fire Company, 851 Parkway Dr., Harwick. We’ll offer flu shots and blood pressure checks, help with various services and programs, and a hot, to-go meal. I hope to see you there!

Securing state funds for Middle Road Volunteer Fire Co.

It was my privilege to stop by Middle Road Volunteer Fire this week to share some good news—I was able to secure the funding for a much needed new truck!

While the pickup we are standing in front of in the above photo is a classic, it is past its prime. They’ve kept it going since 1997! That’s a testament to how volunteer firefighters do so much with so little and keep their equipment going for years and years.

This fire company, like so many others, is in desperate need of funding for equipment so they can be ready when we call. I’m proud to be helping them out.

Partnering with the county to help you with
tax and licensing matters

On Sept. 14, a representative from the Office of Allegheny County Treasurer Erica Rocchi Brusselars will be at my office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help residents with a variety of tax and licensing matters. You can pay county property taxes, apply for the Homestead/Farmstead Exclusion or Senior Citizen Tax Relief programs, or obtain hunting, fishing, or dog licenses. I encourage residents to take advantage of these special hours at my office, located at 1296 Pittsburgh St.

School bus safety is everyone’s responsibility

With children back to school, I want to share an important reminder about using caution in school zones and around buses and kids walking to and from school. Everyone must play a role in keeping students safe.

Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law requires motorists to stop at least 10 feet away from school buses with red lights flashing and the stop arm extended. Penalties include a $250 fine, a 60-day license suspension, and five points on your driving record.

Drivers should also obey school zone speed limits and avoid using their phones (a new law bans hand-held phones while driving in Pennsylvania). Parents should ensure that children know the safest route to their school or bus stop, and students should keep their headphones off whenever they are near traffic.

My office is hiring college interns for fall semester

My district office, located in Cheswick, is hiring two paid college interns for the fall semester. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about state government and the legislative process while assisting the residents of our district. Click here for all the details and application information:

Join Sharpsburg Borough as they celebrate 200 years

Sharpsburg Borough is holding their First Annual Summer Jam Music Festival followed by a Drone Show on Saturday, Sept. 19. It will be at Kennedy Park and start with live music at 1 p.m. There will also be food trucks & beverage options, a live painting and more to celebrate the Sharpsburg Bicentennial.

Veterans services at my office

Twice a month, a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) will be at my Cheswick office, 1296 Pittsburgh St., to assist veterans with a variety of services. The VSO will be available on the third Wednesday and Thursday of each month.
