HARRISBURG, Nov. 21 – A $1 million state grant today was awarded to help create the PSV solar farm in Hanover Township, announced state Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski. “This proposed solar farm project would take unused land in Hanover Township and create a 5-megawatt facility that could provide enough electricity to power between 800 and 1,000 homes in the area. That’s a wonderful opportunity for new construction jobs and the power grid,” said Pashinski, D-Luzerne. “I would like to thank Governor Tom Wolf for his support on this project and for approving the funding.” Pashinski said the construction would include environmental remediation and engineering, grid modernization and electrical infrastructure, construction and maintenance of the facility, and pollinator friendly/landscape shields. The grant was provided through the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, which is administered by Pennsylvania’s Office of the Budget. Funding goes to the acquisition and construction of economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects. RACP projects are state-funded projects that cannot obtain primary funding under other state programs. Today’s RACP award is in addition to others totaling $8.35 million announced by Pashinski in October. Information on those can be found here and here . Read more
While much has been done, Pashinski hopes to do more with House Bill 2858, which would give funds to non-profit organizations that help with legal fees and other services for these grandparents. Read more

HARRISBURG, Oct. 31 – Two additional Luzerne County projects have received funding approval from the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program totaling $3 million, according to state Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne. “I’m proud to have advocated for and received approval for both of these RACP projects, and I want to thank again Governor Wolf for seeing how important this additional $3 million investment will be for Wilkes-Barre and our region,” said Pashinski. “These dollars will help improve our community’s access to affordable health care at the Wright Center’s Wilkes-Barre Practice, as well as improve the capacity and efficiency of our municipal recovery facility.” According to Pashinski, the following organizations are receiving funding in his district: Wright Center for Community Health Wilkes-Barre Practice - $2 million for building out its location in order to equip the space for primary care, dental and behavioral health services. Wilkes-Barre Municipal Recovery Facility Expansion - $1 million to add a metering bin system/infeed conveyor and an optical sorter in order to increase efficiency, allowing for Municipal Recovery Inc. to expand and create jobs. These grants are in addition to the $5.35 million in RACP grants Pashinski and state Rep. Gerald Mullery announced last week for five other local projects . On October 22 I had the honor of attending the Wilkes-Barre NAACP Branch No. 2306’s 27 th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet, where I presented certificates of recognition to a number of members. Each year this event is held to celebrate the accomplishments of the NAACP Wilkes-Barre Branch as well as to recognize individuals who have advanced the organization’s mission. This year the Genetti Hotel and Conference Center’s main ballroom was filled with hundreds of people for the banquet, making it an unmitigated success. This year’s theme was “This Is Power,” with a keynote address from Wanda Ochei, director of Student Services and Engagement at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus. “I first became aware of this issue more than a decade ago when I was fortunate enough to meet several heroes in our communities – grandparents who stepped in to raise their grandchildren for various reasons,” said Pashinski, D-Luzerne. “We passed three bills in 2018 to create important resources for grandparents, bills that I’m very proud will help thousands of people in need. However, our work on this issue is not complete, and it’s one reason why I’m trying to pass House Bill 2858 that would provide for legal services – including adoption – that kinship care families desperately need.” Read more
“Flood damage, stormwater and erosion issues don’t abide by municipal or political boundaries,” said Mullins, D-Lackawanna. “Many miles separate our districts, but all the members of the Policy Committee here today represent municipalities with flooding concerns. It’s not only an issue when it comes to protecting homes, but – as we heard again today – municipalities have a need to find solutions that don’t place an undue burden on taxpayers.” Read more
HARRISBURG, Sept. 27 – State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, introduced legislation today to create a Legal Services for Kinship Care Families Grant Program for eligible nonprofit organizations that provide civil legal services to kinship care families. “Many kinship families are low-income households already facing complex issues and aren’t equipped to navigate the complicated legal process on their own. This legal assistance will allow at-risk children to stay in stable family environments, relieving excessive pressure on the foster care system,” Pashinski said. “In Pennsylvania alone, there are an estimated 202,000 children who live in households that are headed by their grandparents or other relatives and they deserve to access to support and resources just like other foster families.” Under H.B. 2858, grant money through the PA Department of Human Services could used for administrative, civil legal services and other costs associated with a kinship caregiver retaining the services of a lawyer to ensure the safety and welfare of a child in their care, including, but not limited to, guardianship, adoption, power of attorney for medical and educational care, and mediation. The proposal builds on Pashinski’s 2018 legislation creating temporary guardianship for grandparents when parents of children are unable to care for them due to substance use disorder, as well as his H.R. 390, which authorized a Joint State Read more

“Pennsylvania is proud of its mining history, in fact, it’s what helped shaped many parts of the state,” Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski said. “Mining helped fuel everything from our state’s numerous industries to the small towns that formed and grew because of the jobs mines created. However, as we’ve seen in 45 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties that have abandoned mine lands, nothing improves unless organizations, working in lockstep with the government, address the issues created by abandoned mines. That’s why this work is so important, it transforms a problem into a resource.” Read more

HARRISBURG, Sept. 23 – State Reps. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, and Jennifer O’Mara, D-Delaware, introduced legislation on Friday that would bring more accountability to the process of hospital closures to ensure that Pennsylvanians can receive uninterrupted care and that hospital systems must honor their duty to their patients, staff, and the communities they serve. The legislation is a companion to State Sen. Carolyn Comitta’s S.B. 1324 , introduced earlier this month. “When hospitals and health care facilities close or drastically reduce services with little or no notice, their patients, doctors, nurses, and staff suffer,” Pashinski said. “We’re witnessing this firsthand in Luzerne County with the sudden announcement that First Hospital intends to close by October without any apparent plans in place to provide for continuity of care or help their staff transition. This bipartisan, bicameral legislation would be a significant step toward ensuring health care facilities planning to close provide local communities and government agencies the time, information, and opportunity they need to adequately address these significant impacts and plan for related challenges.” “Pennsylvania law needs to improve how it handles for-profit health systems, especially during shutdowns,” O’Mara said. “We need more time to study to find out the impact that closures have on communities, as well as on what Read more
