Hi, my name is Grace Richter and I am excited to return to Rep. Nelson's office as an intern this summer. In May, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Ursinus College with a degree in political science and a minor in theater. I am proud to say that, while in college, I was inducted into two honors societies, the Cub & Key and Whitian Society (which is one society) and Pi Sigma Alpha (our nation's political science honor society). QUAKERTOWN, June 12 – Leaders of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, including state Reps. Napoleon Nelson, Darisha Parker, Justin Fleming and Ismail Smith-Wade-El, released the following statement calling on Bucks County District Attorney Joe Khan to expedite the investigation into the actions of Quakertown Police Chief Scott McElree: “Video footage and eyewitness accounts describing a physical confrontation between the police chief and student protesters have raised significant questions that warrant a swift and transparent investigation. “It is difficult to ignore the concerns raised by members of the community while questions regarding law enforcement conduct remain under review. Public confidence in our justice system depends on all parties being held to the same standard of accountability. “The public deserves a prompt and impartial resolution to this matter, not nearly four months of uncertainty. Continued delays in the investigation of Police Chief McElree only prolong unanswered questions for those involved and for the broader community. “We therefore call upon District Attorney Khan and his office to expedite the investigation into Chief McElree and any officers involved and to announce their findings and charging decisions as soon as practicable. Transparency and timely action are essential to maintaining public trust in the integrity of the justice system. “Our Read more

HARRISBURG, May 8 -- Members of the Pennsylvania House Democratic Caucus today announced the introduction of legislation to strengthen and protect voting rights for Pennsylvanians in response to recent federal court decisions weakening key protections under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. For decades, the Voting Rights Act protected Black voters and other minority communities from discriminatory practices such as racial gerrymandering, voter intimidation and barriers designed to suppress participation in the democratic process. However, the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais and Tennessee, increased the burden required to challenge discriminatory voting maps, placing minority voters at greater risk of having their voting power diluted. In response, the proposed legislation would establish stronger protections in Pennsylvania law to safeguard fair representation and equal access to the ballot box. “The Voting Rights Act was the cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement and has been foundational in the building of a multiracial democracy. And now that democracy is put at risk. Our ancestors fought and died for these protections, and the United States Supreme Court has whisked those sacrifices away with the wave of a hand; silencing the voices of voters that lawmakers will simply choose not to listen to, said state Rep. Napoleon Nelson, chair of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus. Read more
I’m sick of voter disenfranchisement. I’m sick of the US Supreme Court’s interpretation of legislative map making. Frankly, I’m sick of the court system ruling on the assumption that governing bodies operate in the best interests of the public with fairness and equality as the norm. This is not the case, and they know it. Read more

Napoleon Nelson, D-Montgomery, today applauded a new $81,900 grant to the Jenkintown Library from the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Office of Commonwealth Libraries. “Our public libraries are the backbone of our community,” said Nelson. “From community gatherings to educational programs, the Jenkintown Library does so much for our neighbors, and this funding will make it easier for people to patronize the library and provide opportunities for expansion. I am proud to have supported this funding, and I look forward to seeing these renovations come to fruition.” The funding will drive the development of a master plan to improve accessibility, enhance safety, increase energy efficiency, and guide maintenance, renovation, and future expansion.
