Scam alert for seniors, Fish for Free Day & happy Independence Day!

HAVE A HAPPY & SAFE 4TH OF JULY

My office will be closed beginning July 3rd for the Independence Day weekend. We will reopen Tuesday, July 8th during our normal hours.

FISH FOR FREE DAY

As the chair of the House Game & Fisheries Committee, I want to remind you that July 4th is a Fish-for-Free Day! Anyone is allowed ?to legally fish on Pennsylvania waterways that day with NO FISHING LICENSE REQUIRED (Trout/Salmon and Lake Erie permits are also NOT required). All other fishing regulations still apply.?

Fish-for-Free Days are great ways for families to “catch” the fun of fishing!

SCAM ALERT FOR SENIORS

The state Insurance Department, Department of Aging, Department of Banking and Securities, State Police, and Attorney General’s Office are warning residents — especially seniors — about a new inheritance scam involving someone posing as a state employee.

The scam uses fake emails that mimic Commonwealth addresses to convince victims to send money in exchange for a fictitious overseas inheritance. One reported case saw an older Pennsylvanian lose money over nearly a year.

Officials urge residents to:

  • Ignore unsolicited messages offering money or prizes.
  • Verify suspicious emails (official state emails end in @pa.gov).
  • Never share personal info or send money to unknown individuals.
  • Report suspicious activity to state agencies or local law enforcement.

PA’S NEW ONLINE CLEMENCY APPLICATION AVAILABLE

I wanted to share this information about a new program for individuals seeking a pardon.

Over the years, as a lawyer, I handled several pardons matters, and I have been involved with several cases where people have sought pardons.

I am glad to report that the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons has launched a fully online clemency application, making it easier for people seeking a second chance to access the process. The new application system is designed to be faster, more accessible, and user-friendly.

Key features of the new system include:

  • A fully digital clemency application available on the Board’s website.
  • A Spanish-language application, with translation support available for 17 additional languages.
  • A fillable PDF version of the application for those who prefer a downloadable form.
  • Use of AI technology to streamline review of handwritten applications.

This initiative removes common barriers – like the need to print or mail documents – and is part of Pennsylvania’s broader commitment to justice reform and second chances.

To access the online application or learn more, visit the PA Board of Pardons website.
