New law to combat distracted driving, Senior Farmers Market Vouchers update and more!

NEW LAW ON CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Beginning June 5, 2025, Pennsylvania will implement Paul Miller’s Law, aimed at reducing distracted driving incidents and improving road safety. This law was named in memory of Miller, who was killed in a 2010 crash with a distracted driver reaching for his phone.

This new law prohibits drivers from using interactive mobile devices while operating a vehicle, even when stopped at traffic lights or in traffic. Here’s what you need to know:

  • What's banned: Holding or supporting a phone or other device with any part of your body while driving. This includes texting, browsing, or dialing unless it's a single-button press.
  • What's allowed: Using hands-free technology like Bluetooth or dashboard mounts for calls, navigation, or music. Emergency calls to 911 are also permitted.

SENIOR FARMERS MARKET VOUCHERS POSTPONED

I have learned that the distribution date for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers has been postponed. The program offers $25 in vouchers to eligible Allegheny County residents aged 60 and older.

The Department of Agriculture notified the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) that counties across Pennsylvania will receive a 25% reduction in the number of vouchers for distribution to eligible seniors. This has pushed back delivery to the AAA by several weeks.

I’ll send out an update as soon as a new distribution date is set.

PENNDOT WARNS OF SCAM TEXTS

Beware of fake text messages claiming to be from PennDOT or the DMV and do not click on any links or reply to these messages. These scams may try to steal your personal info.

These scam messages indicate that inaction of the message recipient to pay an outstanding fee could result in additional fines, suspended vehicle registration, or suspended driving privileges if not acted on immediately. An example of this text is pictured below.

PennDOT does NOT send texts about violations or fines.

If you get a text like this, report it to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and/or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
