Krueger announces $176,112 state grant to improve walkability in Nether Providence Twp.
Rep. Leanne Krueger February 24, 2025
HARRISBURG, Feb. 24 – State Rep. Leanne Krueger, D-Delaware, today announced that $176,112 in state grant funding is headed to Nether Providence Township for additional sidewalks in the community.
The state funding will be used for the construction of sidewalks on Providence Road between East Rose Valley Road and Putters Lane. The sidewalk construction will link the completed East Rose Valley Sidewalk Project (2022) and the recently completed section of Providence Road from Copples Lane to East Rose Valley Road (2024).
Krueger said this sidewalk will create a safer, more accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists, contributing to a more walkable community. Providence Road is a heavily traveled two-lane state road that connects key community destinations, including a middle school, high school, and two elementary schools. Despite its importance, Providence Road lacks sufficient pedestrian infrastructure, putting pedestrians at risk.
“We have been working with Nether Providence for many years to build pedestrian infrastructure to make our roads safer. This grant will enable the township to continue its efforts in making the township more walkable and invest in pedestrian safety,” Krueger said.
The grants awarded today, including this one, come from the Department of Community and Economic Development’s Multimodal Transportation Fund. They may be used for the development, rehabilitation and enhancement of transportation assets to existing communities, streetscape, lighting, sidewalk enhancement, pedestrian safety, connectivity of transportation assets and transit-oriented development.
The Commonwealth Financing Authority approved the grants this morning. The authority was established in 2004 as an independent agency of DCED to administer Pennsylvania’s economic development programs.
