Delco lawmakers announce school bus safety grant for Wallingford-Swarthmore

HARRISBURG, July 22 — State Reps. Leanne Krueger, Dave Delloso and Jennifer O’Mara, all D-Delaware, today announced that $47,084 in state grant funding has been awarded to the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District to train new school bus drivers and promote bus safety.
The funding comes from PennDOT’s School Bus Safety Grant Program, which they voted to fund in Pennsylvania’s annual budget. Funding for the program is generated from a portion of the fine revenue collected from enforcement of the state’s School Bus Stopping Law.
“Reliable school transportation is essential to student success, and making sure our children have safe rides to and from school is so important,” Krueger said. “With this funding we are helping school districts address workforce shortages while making sure students have a safe and dependable way to get to school. Any school district or bus contractor interested in applying for this program is welcome to contact my office for help with the application and a letter of support.”
"When we invest in school bus drivers, we invest in student safety and student success,” Delloso said. “I'm proud to support funding that helps schools recruit and train the professionals they need to safely transport our children every day."
“As a parent and a legislator, the School Bus Safety Grant Program is very important to me,” O’Mara said. “Programs such as this promote safety and help hold down our local school taxes. I’m very happy to see Wallingford-Swarthmore receiving this grant, and I’m also happy to help any local transportation provider benefit from this program in the future.”
The legislators said funds from the program can be used to pay for education, training, and other costs related to an individual earning their commercial learner's permit, commercial driver's license, or school bus endorsement for the purpose of driving a school bus in Pennsylvania. They can also promote and increase school bus safety, education, and training.
