It was a busy week in the district, from our Staying Safe Online and Off event to policy hearings and preparing for more community events later this month. I’m also excited to share news about Green Light-Go grant awards for Brookhaven Borough and Ridley Township that will help improve traffic safety in our community.

Investing in safer roads

I'm excited to share that more than $500,000 in state Green Light-Go funding has been awarded to Brookhaven Borough and Ridley Township to improve traffic signals in our community!

These improvements will help make our roads safer and traffic flow more efficiently for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Brookhaven Borough received $168,686 to upgrade the traffic signals at Edgmont Ave. & Trimble Blvd. and Edgmont Ave. & Whiteley Rd.
Ridley Township received $399,918 to modernize the traffic signal at Fairview Rd. & Jefferson Ave.

Building a strong path to adulthood

Last Tuesday, I joined the House Majority Policy Committee for a policy roundtable focused on learning more about the challenges young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities face as they transition out of K-12 and into adult services, as well as the resources and support they need to succeed.

The roundtable was held at the Camphill School Transition Program at Beaver Farm, in Phoenixville, and co-hosted by Rep. Paul Friel and Rep. Danielle Friel Otten. We heard from educators, parents, advocates, and service providers about the challenges individuals and families face as they navigate adult services, employment opportunities, and community support.

These conversations are critical as we work to identify ways state policy can strengthen resources and improve outcomes, helping individuals with intellectual and development disabilities lead more independent and fulfilling lives. I appreciate everyone who took the time to share their experiences and expertise.

Honoring 61 years of the Voting Rights Act

On Saturday, I joined the League of Women Voters of Central Delaware County, fellow elected officials and community members for the National Day of Action to Unite & Rise, marking the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The event also included a special tribute to Anna Howard Shaw, a Delaware County suffrage leader who dedicated her life to advancing voting rights and equality.

It was wonderful to see our community come together for a day of civic action and to recognize the importance of protecting voting rights and strengthening our democracy.

Helping our community stay scam-savvy

Last Thursday, I hosted a workshop to help our community learn how to recognize scams and better protect their personal information when they're online and in their everyday lives.

We had a nice turnout, and attendees heard about the latest scams and fraud trends from the experts at the N.I.T.E. Center at Neumann University, a state-of-the-art crime lab that partners with the Aston Township Police Department and the Delaware County District Attorney's Office. The presentation was led by Detective Joe Walsh, of the Aston Township Police, who shared valuable tips and answered questions from attendees.

We were also joined by the Delaware County Victim Assistance Center, which provided helpful resources and information for those who may be impacted by scams and fraud.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to our outstanding partners for helping make this workshop such a success.

Changes coming to PA Medicaid in 2027

Beginning in January 2027, some Pennsylvania Medicaid recipients aged 19-64 will see changes to their coverage requirements under a new federal law. The PA Department of Human Services is providing information now, so individuals have time to prepare before these changes take effect.

For some adults, MA coverage will need to be renewed every six months instead of annually. In addition, some recipients will be required to meet and report work and community engagement requirements to maintain their Medicaid coverage.

There are a few simple steps you can take now to help ensure you continue receiving important notices from DHS:

Keep your mailing address up to date through COMPASS or the myCOMPASS PA mobile app.
Report address changes to the US Postal Service.
Sign up to receive text and email notifications from DHS.
Watch your mail and respond promptly to any requests for additional information.

If you receive a notice from DHS, need to submit requested information, or have questions about your Medicaid coverage, my office is here to help. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need assistance navigating these upcoming changes.

PA Caregiver Connection resource

The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) recently launched a free online resource specifically designed for families of loved ones with substance use disorders to help find support.

Caregiver Connection is a website for parents, grandparents, siblings and others supporting a loved one with a substance use disorder. It’s a one-stop shop of resources such as a searchable inventory of local and online support groups, a tool to connect caregivers with one another, a locator for the nearest county drug and alcohol office, a directory of where to get free naloxone, and more.

The development of Caregiver Connection was guided by a Parent Advisory Board of family members with varying lived experience from across Pennsylvania advising on what to include, how to present it, and what language to use. Board members contributed their knowledge, perspectives, and personal experiences to ensure this tool reflects what families need.

Apply for the Nonprofit Security Grant Fund Program

Nonprofit organizations can apply now for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program to enhance security and protect against hate crimes at their facilities. I voted to include this $10 million program administered by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency in the 2026-27 state budget.

Grants can range from $5,000 to $150,000 for a variety of eligible items, including:

Safety and security planning and training;
Purchase safety and security equipment and technology;
Upgrade existing structures that enhance safety and security; and
Vulnerability and threat assessments.

The deadline for organizations to apply online is Thursday, Sept. 10.

Oct. 27 – Last day to apply for a mail ballot. vote.pa.gov/MailBallot

Nov. 3 – Election Day. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
