Menopause care and support advances in the House

PA Representative Leanne Krueger banner image

October is flying by, and my team and I have been busy serving residents both here in the district and in Harrisburg.

Here at home, I had the opportunity to connect with neighbors at Nether Providence Township’s Family Fun Day, attend the very moving opening ceremony for The Wall That Heals in Aston, present $100,000 in state funding to the Upland Fire Company, and host an informative workshop to help local nonprofits and municipalities learn more about available state grants and funding resources.

In Harrisburg last week, I was proud to vote for a package of bills focused on improving menopause care, expanding access to treatment and providing greater support for women across Pennsylvania.

I’m also excited to share that new state funding has been awarded to Nether Providence Township for improvements at Gouley Park.

You can read more about these updates, along with upcoming events, programs and resources, below. As always, my staff and I are here to help.

I work hard to bring state funding back to our district to support projects that strengthen our communities. I’m proud that Nether Providence Township has been awarded $70,600 to continue improvements at Gouley Park.

The funding will support the construction of a pedestrian walkway, ADA accessibility improvements, landscaping, project signage and other site improvements. The funding comes through the Community Conservation Partnership Program, managed by DCNR Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.

These improvements will help make Gouley Park more accessible and welcoming for everyone in our community.

House passes ‘No Time for Pause’ Package

Four bills focused on improving menopause care and support for women in Pennsylvania passed the House this week with strong bipartisan support:

HB 1345 – Medicaid Coverage for Menopause – Would require Pennsylvania’s Medical Assistance programs to cover a range of hormonal treatments for menopause symptoms, helping ensure women enrolled in Medicaid can access the care they need without additional financial barriers.

HB 1346 – Insurance Coverage for Menopause – Would require private insurers to provide coverage for hormonal and non-hormonal therapies used to treat menopause symptoms, including menopause resulting from a hysterectomy.

HB 1411 – Menopause Education – Would direct the Pennsylvania Department of Health to work with health care providers to expand education and awareness about menopause ad perimenopause, including symptoms, treatment options and long-term health impacts.

HB 2135 – Menopause and Perimenopause Workplace Protections and Accommodations Act – Would establish reasonable workplace accommodations for employees experiencing menopause and perimenopause symptoms, including flexible breaks, access to cold water, temperature adjustments and other practical supports.

I voted in support of all four bills, which now head to the Senate for consideration.

Honoring Vietnam Veterans at The Wall That Heals

Last Thursday, I had the honor of attending the moving opening ceremony for The Wall That Heals in Aston Township.

The ceremony brought our community together to reflect, remember and honor the men and women who served during the Vietnam War, especially the 58,281 service members whose names are inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and who made the ultimate sacrifice.

While there, I also had the honor of meeting two Delaware County Vietnam veterans, Ralph Galati and Patrick J. Hughes.

Ralph Galati was shot down over North Vietnam on February 16, 1972, and held as a prisoner of war for 14 months. A graduate of St. James High School in Chester and St. Joseph’s University, Ralph has continued to serve our community as a dedicated advocate for veterans throughout Delaware County.

Patrick J. Huges served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and has dedicated his work as a professional photographer to honoring our nation’s service members and their families. Through his photography and advocacy, he has documented dignified transfers of fallen service members, military memorial dedications and the return home of those who served.

It was incredibly meaningful to spend time with Ralph and Patrick and to join our community in honoring the courage, service and sacrifice of all those who served in Vietnam. The Wall That Heals is a powerful reminder that their stories, their service and their sacrifices must never be forgotten.

Check presentation to Upland Fire Company

Last Thursday, I was proud to present Upland Fire Company with $100,000 in state funding to help replace its broken HVAC system.

Our local fire companies provide an essential service to our communities, and it’s important that they have safe, reliable facilities and the resources they need to continue their work. This funding will help make necessary improvements to the firehouse and ensure that the building can continue to serve the firefighters who dedicate their time protecting our neighbors.

I’m always proud to advocate for state funding that supports our first responders and strengthens the organizations that serve our communities every day.

Successful workshop for State Grants & Funding Resources

Last Friday, I hosted a grants and funding resources workshop for local nonprofit organizations and municipalities, and I was thrilled to see a packed room!

The workshop gave attendees the opportunity to learn how to find available grant and funding opportunities, get tips for putting together successful applications, and speak directly with representatives from grant-making agencies.

A big thank you to our presenters from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, PA House Appropriations Committee, The Foundation for Delaware County, and the Delaware County Commerce Center Economic Development Oversight Board for sharing their expertise and answering questions.

I know how important these resources are to the organizations and municipalities doing great work in our communities, and I was glad to bring everyone together to help connect them with the tools and information they need to pursue funding opportunities.

Nether Providence Family Fun Day

It was a beautiful fall Saturday to spend the day in Nether Providence Township for Family Fun Day! I was happy to have a resource table at the event and enjoyed speaking with so many neighbors throughout the day.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and learn more about the resources available through my office. And thanks to all who made Family Fun Day such a wonderful community event.

Celebrating a special milestone

With the House back in session last week, we passed several bills focused on protecting Pennsylvanians, expanding access to health care and giving more people a voice in our elections. Here are a few of the bills we advanced that I want to highlight:

On Sunday, I was so happy to join family and friends in celebrating Harry Seth’s 80th birthday! It was a wonderful afternoon filled with good company, great memories and plenty of birthday cheer.

It’s always special to celebrate milestones like this with members of our community. Wishing Harry a verry happy 80th birthday and many more wonderful years ahead!

Make sure you have a plan to vote

The General Election is coming up on November 3, and now is the time to make sure you are ready to cast your ballot. Whether you plan to vote in person or by mail, there are a few important deadlines to keep in mind.

If you are not yet registered to vote, October 19 is the last day to register for the General Election, no matter how you plan to vote. If you prefer to vote by mail, October 27 is the deadline to request a mail-in or absentee ballot. Be sure to give yourself enough time to complete the process and return your ballot.

On Election Day, November 3, polls will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM. Take a moment now to make a plan for when and how you will vote.

Returning your mail-in ballot

Voters utilizing mail-in ballots have options on how to return them: by mail, at a drop box, or at an election office. Under Pennsylvania law, voters must return their own ballots. The only exceptions to this are for voters with a disability who have designated someone in writing using the Designated Agent Form to deliver their ballot.

With Election Day quickly approaching, I encourage voters who already have their mail-in ballot to return it as soon as possible. Given recent mail delays, if you are concerned your ballot may not arrive in time, consider returning it directly to a secure ballot drop box or election office rather than relying on the mail.

Delaware County has 28 secure, ADA-compliant ballot drop box locations available throughout the county including the drop box at the Government Center in Media.

You can track the status of your mail-in or absentee ballot here.

Find your polling place

Not sure where to vote? You can find your polling place and other important voter information through Delaware County Elections.

For voter registration, mail-in ballot applications, and additional election information, visit vote.pa.gov. Make your voice heard this November and make a plan to vote!

Upcoming changes to Medicaid starting in January

Do you know about the upcoming changes to Medicaid and how they could affect your healthcare coverage AND costs? Thanks to changes by the federal government, there are new work and reporting requirements, plus you’ll need to renew your coverage every six months (instead of every 12 months). It’s important that you watch for communication from Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services in your mailbox letting you know about the changes and you can be prepared. You may have already received a letter like this explaining how to meet the work requirements and possible exemptions for individuals. You might also receive a text message on your smartphone (from 69217) or robocall (from 1-877-839-4782). Those are the only legitimate sources of messaging you’ll receive about Medicaid changes from DHS.
