The Health Systems Protection Act, Community Town Hall, and Local Memorial Day Events!

Hi Neighbor,

Last Thursday, Gov. Josh Shapiro came to Delaware County to call on the PA General Assembly to pass the Health System Protection Act, introduced by my colleagues Delaware County state Sen. Tim Kearney and state Rep. Lisa Borowski. This bill will give the Pennsylvania Attorney General additional oversight in healthcare deals that involve private equity and ban the kind of lease-lease back deals that helped drive Crozer Health into bankruptcy. While it will not save Crozer, it would prevent the devastation that Prospect Medical Holdings caused here in Delaware County from happening anywhere else in Pennsylvania. We expect to bring the bill up for a vote in the House the first week of June, with a strong push to get it passed in the Senate and to the Governor’s desk for him to sign into law. We passed a similar bill last session out of the House that died in the Senate when the Senate Majority Chairman took out all references to private equity, but private equity has now closed three hospitals in Pennsylvania since that vote and I’m hopeful that our colleagues in the Senate will join our efforts to hold them accountable.

At last Thursday’s press conference in front of Crozer Medical Center, I spoke about all the steps we took to try to stop Prospect, and how they were able to close anyway. With Crozer and Taylor Hospitals now closed, the buildings will now be sold through bankruptcy auction. The ambulatory surgical centers are supposed to go up for auction this week and the other buildings will be auctioned at a later date. In the meantime, the Governor announced a $1M grant in partnership with the Delaware County delegation to provide EMS coverage for the next three months in the communities that were left without ALS coverage through Prospect’s closure. It will also ensure that an ambulance is stationed outside of Crozer-Chester Hospital for the next three months, which is key since 155 people showed up at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in the twelve months after it closed.

IN THE DISTRICT

DCIU Legislative Breakfast

Last Friday I attended the Delaware County Intermediate Unit Legislative Breakfast, where I had the privilege of joining Delaware County students, educational leaders, and fellow elected officials to discuss the future of education, especially the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom.

Hearing directly from students on the AI Student Forum was particularly insightful, as they shared how AI is being used as a responsible and effective learning tool in the classroom

This event was a powerful reminder of the value of listening to data, to educators, and most importantly, to students.

We had a fantastic Pet Expo!

We had fantastic turnout and perfect weather for our Pet Expo at Upland Park this past Saturday, co-hosted with state Sen. John Kane. Attendees were able to get their pets vaccinated, dogs microchipped and licensed, and enjoyed giveaways, treats, and a variety of pet vendors.  A special highlight was the Upland Borough Police K-9 demonstration by Officer Canzanese with assistance from Corporal Nicholl. It was a wonderful day spent with our community and their furry friends!

They also will answer questions.

This training is designed to assist Crozer Health employees who recently lost their employment and is also open to the public.

If you have questions about Unemployment Compensation in Pennsylvania, this training will provide helpful information.
