Miller recognized nationally for his work on mental health

HARRISBURG, Dec. 9 – State Rep. Dan Miller has been recognized as one of Mental Health America’s 2025 State Legislative Champions.

Miller, D-Allegheny, was nominated for the national recognition by Mental Health America of Southwestern PA.

“Advocating for mental health and disability issues is – unfortunately -- a constant effort, but a necessary one,” Miller said. “The disability and mental health system is essential; it must work, be sustainable and provide access, because if it doesn’t, the outcome is catastrophic. That’s why we have to push to do better, and we have to listen to self-advocates to learn from them what works and what doesn’t. These are things that matter and why what my office and I do is so important. We’re working to create a system that provides for everyone.

“I am honored to be considered an advocate for mental health,” he said.

During his time in the Pennsylvania General Assembly, Miller has made improving mental health and disability outcomes for Pennsylvanians a priority. Among his many initiatives, Miller has introduced and supported legislation to require comprehensive counseling services in schools; increase workforce opportunities for Pennsylvanians with all types of disabilities; and incorporate disability and mental health education into K-12 curricula. He also has conducted a host of related events for his constituents, including his annual Disability and Mental Health Summit, which has been occurring for the last 12 years, and a series of community forums on substance use disorder.

The award recognizes leading state legislators who demonstrate a commitment to advancing mental health and substance use disorder policies and treatment access.

Miller was formally recognized at Mental Health America’s 2025 Regional Policy Council meeting today. The organization honored state legislators who have championed impactful policy change in support of people with mental health and substance use disorders.
