NEWS RELEASE: Kenyatta honors lives lost, acknowledges strength and resistance on World AIDS Day

On the 37th Annual World AIDS Day, state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta released the following statement reaffirming his support for people impacted by HIV and AIDS:

“Today, we remember the millions of lives lost to AIDS and recognize the incredible resilience of communities who fought through the AIDS crisis with compassion and dignity for the sick being the top priority.

“Thanks to decades of advocacy, medical breakthroughs, and community leadership, HIV is no longer a death sentence—but far too many people still face barriers to testing, treatment, and care.

“The federal funding cuts recently made to HIV research are an egregious disregard to the decades of work to break the stigma of an HIV diagnosis and the strides made by doctors, scientist, and advocates whose work brings us closer to a cure each day.

“It shows us that the fight is far from over and we still have work to do.  As long as HIV and AIDS remain a reality, we must keep challenging the stigma, supporting the people and communities who are impacted and continue the work for a cure,” Kenyatta said.

Kenyatta continues to be a fierce advocate for the rights of people diagnosed with HIV by championing legislation such as changing outdated penal codes that criminalize HIV with sentence enhancements for prostitution and increase access to PrEP, a medication to prevent HIV.
