Dear Neighbor,

Two weeks into the new year, and there's already so much to report on.

Property Tax/Renter's Rebate Applications opened on the 15th. They can be completed online here, or by mail. My office can help you find out if you qualify.

Grant Updates

The following grants were awarded in the 162nd Legislative District by the CFA via the Statewide Local Share Account, which distributes gaming revenue to support regional projects in the public interest:

  • Darby Township will receive $184,429 to renovate the police station to properly accommodate the number of officers on duty and to improve the building layout, making it easier for officers to interact with members of the public.
    • It will also receive $200,000 toward replacing municipal vehicles, including five police cars, and to purchase a lowboy dump truck with a snowplow that can also transport storm sewer debris, mulch, etc.
  • Folcroft Borough will receive $254,356 to get an emergency power generator for the Ethan Joner Community Center, allowing it to meet the requirements to be designated as a FEMA emergency shelter for weather events.
  • Norwood Borough will receive $100,000 to renovate the playground at Lower Park, the largest and most developed open space and recreation area in the borough. The project will provide new and accessible equipment for kids ages 2-12. It will also add shade structure, upgrade parking areas to be ADA-compliant, and create a safer access point to the park.
  • Prospect Park Borough will receive $450,000 to replace Prospect Park Fire Company’s 28-year-old water pumper truck, providing it with updated firefighting and rescue capabilities.
  • Ridley Park Borough will receive $700,000 to renovate Ridley Park Library to meet modern accessibility standards while preserving its +100-year-old historical significance. In addition to infrastructure repairs, the project includes a 1,200 sq. ft. addition to increase capacity.
  • Sharon Hill Borough will receive $500,000 to demolish and rebuild its police station in order to meet growing capacity and add features to help the department undergo the accreditation process. Enhancements will include a more secure evidence room and processing area, addition of interview rooms and areas for victims to meet with officers, and increasing squad room security.

Around the District

Last Monday, I attended the first Hi-Q tournament of the year at Academy Park. Hi-Q is one of the oldest high school competitions in the country, giving high schoolers the opportunity to show off their math skills and Shakespearean aptitude.

It's always great to see Delco's brightest students give it their all in a battle of wits and have fun doing it.

On Thursday, I had the opportunity to tour a group home for individuals with intellectual disabilities. CHIMES Holcomb Behavioral Health provides a variety of services. In Delaware County, they have 6 homes like this one, where 1-3 adults with higher support needs are aided by round-the-clock staff.

My hope is to provide more support for non-profits like this, and to bolster state-run equivalents, so that people like Edward can live comfortably and with dignity.
