You're protected from utility shutoffs in November

Dear Neighbor,

As temperatures drop, our heating bills go up – and so does the stress.

Normally, our utility companies begin their moratorium on shutoffs in December. If you’re struggling to pay your heating bill, they will ensure your service remains on during the coldest months. This helps protect the health and safety of our elderly and disabled Pennsylvanians.

Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, Pennsylvania must delay opening its LIHEAP program until December 3rd. This means many people are not receiving the assistance they need, and would be facing utility shutoffs earlier than expected.

Thankfully, however, the Public Utility Commission and Governor Shapiro have secured commitments from our utility companies to begin their shutoff moratoriums immediately. If you are behind on your heating bill this month, don’t worry—you will not be shut off.

However, make sure to stay on top of your bill as much as possible. PECO is often willing to work with customers on payment plans and credits through the Customer Assistance Program (CAP).

Right before hitting "send" on this e-newsletter, I received another important update about SNAP benefits, which did not go out on schedule, due again to the federal government shutdown.

Governor Shapiro just announced that the federal government has begun releasing November’s SNAP benefits. If you receive SNAP, please check your EBT card, as funds may now be available.

This important development follows a lawsuit filed by Pennsylvania and several other states, which resulted in a federal court ordering that emergency funds be used to continue SNAP payments. Today’s announcement means families across our community should soon have access to the support they’ve been waiting for.

My office will continue to share updates as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Pennsylvania State Rep. David M. Delloso
