Dear Neighbor,
A few months ago, my colleagues and I in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a budget bill that would responsibly fund our communities’ most urgent needs, including public transportation. The Senate, however, has largely dragged its feet, forcing SEPTA to implement drastic service cuts and fare increases.
Now, SEPTA has adopted a temporary solution—one we all hoped to avoid. Governor Shapiro granted SEPTA permission to use its capital assistance funds to cover daily operations. While this will reduce the money available for repairs and maintenance, it will allow SEPTA to restore full service for a limited period of time.
Unfortunately, the fare increases will remain in place.
This measure will provide some relief to commuters and residents who rely on SEPTA. Please know, however, that I remain committed to ensuring SEPTA receives the funding it needs and will continue to advocate for a stable funding source in Harrisburg.

DMVA encourages us to reach out & check on the veterans in our lives
|
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and Pennsylvania’s Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is reminding everyone of the resources available for those in crisis or in need of additional support.
|
Veterans remain at an elevated risk of suicide — and one veteran suicide is one too many. The DMVA encourages everyone to reach out to the veterans in their lives and remind them that someone cares, even if it has been a while since you last spoke.
If you are a veteran in crisis, or if you are concerned about one, free and confidential support is available 24/7. Call the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988, then press 1, or send a text to 838255, or chat online.
Two more resources available to you are:
|
- VETConnect, an outreach program that connects veterans and their families with local resources to meet their needs when it comes to finding a place to live, finding a job, getting mental health support, and more.
In the DMVA’s announcement, Maj. Gen. John Pippy stated, “This is one of the most pressing social issues facing our veteran community, making it imperative that we have conversations, raise awareness, and search for solutions. We owe it to veterans for all they have endured and continue to endure because of the unique challenges they faced in service to our country.”
I wholeheartedly agree.
