A big step closer to protecting ALL workers on the job

Dear Neighbor,

I am extremely proud of the bills we passed in the House of Representatives this week.

The first has to do with protecting workers while they’re on the job. Did you know that public sector employees – such as nurses, police, and firefighters – don’t have the same Occupational Safety and Health Administration protections as their counterparts in the private sector? This is even though public workers are 64% more likely to get injured on the job.

Well, this bill aims to change that. The Department of Labor & Industry would be required to develop safety regulations, inspections, and reporting standards. Employees will not only be safer but also won’t be afraid to speak up if they get hurt or notice something hazardous in the workplace.

I rose to address my colleagues and encourage their "yes" vote on the worker protection bill when it was brought up for debate on the House floor. You may watch me deliver my remarks via this YouTube video.

The second bill is something that should’ve been done a long time ago: a COLA (cost-of-living adjustment) for public sector retirees. It’s been 23 years since the last one – even with all the inflation of the past few years. Most of these retirees are elderly and many are struggling to afford groceries, housing, and medicine. They deserve to live in dignity.

This bill would provide an increase of:

  • 24.5% for those who retired at least 43 years ago
  • 20% for those who retired 34 years ago
  • 15% increase for those who retired 24 years ago

Now I’m going to encourage my friends in the state Senate to do the right thing and pass these bills into law.

FYI

Real ID Enforcement Begins May 7 – BUT if you’re not flying or visiting a U.S. government building, you’ve still got some time

As of May 7 you will need a Real ID, valid U.S. Passport or Military ID to board a domestic airline flight or visit a federal government building.

A lot of people are worrying about the deadline and rushing – and waiting in long lines -- to get their Real ID right now. But, if you don’t already have a flight scheduled or have no need to visit a federal government building after May 7, your regular PA Driver’s License or non-driver photo ID will keep working just fine.

Make no mistake, you don’t have to get a Real ID to drive, apply for state benefits or a lot of things. If you’re planning on traveling by plane and want to continue using your state driver’s license or photo ID as identification at the airport, however, you will eventually need to upgrade to a REAL ID-compliant version and should get one as soon as it’s convenient.

But, for now, unless you’ve got plane tickets already booked for a Memorial Day Weekend getaway you can probably wait for the crowds to die down.
