HEARING: AFTER THE STORM
I am hosting a hearing on Wednesday, May 21 at 6:30 PM in my district at the Lauri Ann West Community Center at 1220 Powers Run Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15238. If you were impacted by the prolonged power outage, we invite you to hear directly from Duquesne Light and West Penn Power on what went right and what went wrong. I have made sure that this hearing happened in record time, in order to be prepared for the next big storm. If you have questions for Duquesne Light or West Penn Power, please email them to me at repsteele@pahouse.net. We will ask as many of them as we can.
FOLLOW-UP TO PUC ANNOUNCEMENT
I call on the PUC to investigate and prevent any kind of disaster from occurring again. Some folks in my district have been without power for over 15 days. Some of those people are seniors, sick and dependent on electricity to power medical devices. The people I represent truly suffered. They want answers, and so do I. As your State Representative, I will continue to fight for protections and preventative actions to keep our communities safe from another disaster of this magnitude within our communities.
ADMIST THE HARDSHIP, A BRIGHT SPOT
Thank you to the linemen across the area who worked in incredibly difficult conditions as fast as they could to get our power back on in our communities. These linemen were out around the clock, climbing poles, wrangling electrical wire and fallen trees, and doing everything they could to assist us at home. Since the cleanup began, I’ve heard stories from linemen who have received snacks, water, and encouragement from our community members. Thank a lineman!
MEALS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY
I had the opportunity to host a few meals within our community for folks to come to talk to me about their power issues. Thank you to everyone who came out to speak to me and let me know what they have been through. I appreciate hearing every story and I will be sure to take all of your stories with me as I continue to advocate for my community members in Harrisburg.
SHRED EVENT SUCCESS
Our Shred event was a great success. Thank you to all of our community members who came out to safely dispose of their personal documents with us.
KEYSTONE SAVES
Keystone Saves is giving Pennsylvania workers the power to control their own future. Over 2 million PA workers don’t have access to any kind of retirement plan. This bill would offer access, protections, and flexibility to our workers across the Commonwealth. No one should have to work until they die.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS BRONZE MEDALIST
Allegheny County is home to the bronze medal winner for downhill skiing in the Special Olympics. It was an honor to recognize her in the House chamber this week!
SENIOR FARMERS MARKET NUTRITION PROGRAM
The 2025 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) is now available for eligible seniors across Allegheny County. Any eligible senior may receive one set of vouchers, accepted at participating farmers markets. One set of vouchers is $25, issued as five $5 vouchers. There will be an in-person distribution of vouchers on a first-come, first-served basis on Tuesday, June 10th, 2025, at Allegheny County Senior Community Centers.
