Nelson weekly email for October 3: Briefing with the Beavers

Hi, my name is Cheyanne Fleming, and not only am I an Arcadia University student, but I’m also interning at Rep. Nelson’s office. He has asked me to provide updates on the awesome news happening on campus.

We have many interesting events scheduled for this Fall semester. Once again, Arcadia University is absolutely crushing it! Known for its renowned study abroad programs, this year, Arcadia University has ranked number one in Pennsylvania for study abroad programs for the ninth year in a row.

This October, Arcadia University has also consecutively ranked number seven in Pennsylvania for the seventh year in a row as a Top Performer on Social Mobility. This specific ranking determines how schools best support students with economic disadvantages and is calculated through the graduation rates of students using Pell grants.

As a fun-filled event this year, Arcadia students enthusiastically lined up for more information about traveling abroad during the 2025 Study Abroad Fair. With a wide range of programs, students will have the option to visit countries such as Indonesia, France, Iceland, and South Korea. I wish for happy traveling for all students participating this year.

How I Voted

This week’s top headlines legislatively were the consideration of four common-sense gun regulation bills. Of the four bills, only state Rep. Perry Warren’s H.B. 1593 was able to pass the House (with a vote of 104-99). This bill would make the same background checks that are currently required to purchase a pistol and shorter-barreled shotguns to also be required should you want to purchase a longer-barreled firearm.

The other three bills all failed to advance with a vote of 101-102 with Dem. Rep. Frank Burns joining all Republicans voting in opposition. H.B. 1099 would prohibit the manufacturing of guns made without metal parts (due to the challenge of detecting them or tracing bullets from their use). H.B. 1866 would prohibit machine gun conversion kits, the small Lego-like pieces that can be used to turn a simple pistol into a rapid-fire automatic weapon. H.B. 1859 would allow judges to temporarily restrict access to firearms for individuals deemed an extreme risk to themselves or others. This last bill, commonly known as “extreme risk protection orders” or the “Red Flag” law, is the one that I deem the most important. I have written about this before earlier this year and in prior years, but none of these bills will advance through the Republican-held Senate.

Remembering a Great Neighbor

This week, I want to recognize and remember Elan Kaplan, an outstanding leader in our community who passed away earlier this week. Elan, a 2011 graduate of Cheltenham High School, owned Sabia Landscaping, a neighbor of my district office. His kindness and generosity were clear, and he has left a lasting impact on everyone around him, myself included. My staff and I send our condolences to Elan's family and friends, and will greatly miss such a wonderful neighbor.

Mitzvah Circle Donations

STILL Collecting Donations for Mitzvah Circle!

You may have heard that a couple of weeks ago, one of Mitzvah Circle Foundation’s storage trailers caught fire. While everyone is safe, and emergency responders were able to put out the fire, the loss was insurmountable. Damage from the fire, water and smoke caused a loss of $1.2 million in new, wholesale purchased goods that were planned to be distributed to families in their communities.

These items included new clothing and back packs for students to begin their school year with dignity, undergarments, shoes, diapers and 200 pack n plays. The pack n plays typically go to hospitals, which they give to families who cannot afford a crib, ensuring infants can sleep safely at home.

The initial news story can be found here

My office is collecting the items in the graphic above to help replace some of the items they lost. You can drop off these items at my office, 115 E. Glenside Ave., Suite 8. Please call my office with any questions, 215-572-5210.

Pennie (ACA) Insurance is on the chopping block

Pennie (ACA) is on the Chopping Block

Unless US Congress acts, enhanced premium tax credits for Marketplace (ACA) insurance will expire on Dec. 31.

This means starting with open enrollment on Nov. 1, many Pennsylvanians could see their monthly premiums increase by up to 82%.

Nearly 500,000 Pennsylvanians rely on Pennie for affordable coverage — including small business owners, gig workers, farmers, early retirees, and those on COBRA. Without these credits, some premiums could double or even quadruple, putting coverage out of reach for nearly 250,000 people.

Pennie remains the only place to get plans with:
Out-of-pocket cost caps
No annual or lifetime limits
Pre-existing condition coverage

If you have Pennie coverage and want help navigating open enrollment, visit Pennie’s Help Center at pennie.com/connect to connect with local certified assisters and brokers, or call 1-844-844-8040 (M–F, 8 AM–6 PM).
