Nelson weekly update for May 30, 2025: Meet Our Intern Grace

Intern Introduction

Hello! My name is Grace Richter, and I am a rising senior at Ursinus College. I am a political science major, and I plan to work in government post-graduation. I applied for this internship to help prepare me for a career in government by showing me the inner workings of state and local politics. I am excited to be working in District 154 specifically because I live in the district and feel very connected to it, as I am originally from Los Angeles but have been living in Wyndmoor for the past seven years. I have been interested in politics since middle school, so interning at Rep. Nelson's office seemed like the perfect next step in both my academic and professional careers.

The High Note

Our Thursday was busy!

After hours, we stopped by the Jenkintown-Wyncote train station for a rally in support of funding SEPTA and mass transit across the state. I will continue to be a strong advocate for this funding, knowing how many folks in my district, in the region, and across the state rely on public transportation to commute to work, to school, to medical appointments, and even to Phillies games.

Then, my team and I headed over to Springfield for a Town Hall with the Township’s Environmental Advisory Commission. You can watch a recording of the event on my Facebook page. It was insightful to hear from the EAC about their dually money-saving and climate-beneficial efforts across the Township, from fine-tuning energy systems in Township buildings to replacing incandescent streetlights with LEDs. As much of a delight was the ensuing discussion with residents on other issues in the Township and what is happening in the state legislature.

I hear you, and I will continue to work for you!

Reminder: Check Your Energy Bills

In PA, utility customers have the opportunity choose their electricity or natural gas supplier. Regardless of who you choose to supply your energy, PECO will continue to serve as your energy delivery company, respond to outages, and manage billing.

But if you are enrolled with a competitive electric generation or natural gas supplier, the rate you are charged could be higher or lower than the rate charged by PECO. You should check PECO’s Price to Compare (electric PTC | natural gas PTC) to see the current rates for PECO customers and how they compare to the rates charged by competitive energy suppliers.

If you are currently enrolled with a competitive energy supplier, you should review your contract terms and conditions and contact your supplier to discuss pricing options. Ask the following questions:

  • Will the supplier charge a fixed or variable rate?
  • Is there an escalation clause in the contract?
  • How long is the contract term?
  • Are there any early termination or cancellation fees?
  • Based on PECO’s current PTC, how much will you save over the term of the contract?

More information about understanding a contract with a competitive natural gas or electric generation supplier can be found on the PA Public Utility Commission’s websites www.pagasswitch.com or www.papowerswitch.com or PECO’s website.

Other Programs & Events

SHARE Housing Program

We know that many seniors in the district may be struggling to make ends meet, facing high property taxes, the rising cost of living, or other financial burdens.

One option for you to generate some extra cash, get help maintaining your home, and have more company around is the PA Department of Aging’s Shared Housing and Resource Exchange (SHARE) program, designed to help keep seniors in their homes. This program connects interested homeowners with homeseekers after a thorough application and vetting process to ensure an appropriate match.

Montco is currently on the search for more homeowners for this program, so if you have extra space in your home and are interested in becoming a host, please contact Montgomery County’s SHARE Housing Counselor Tim Barr at (484) 682-7804 or tbarr@fsmontco.org.

This is a SCAM, and if you receive this text, you should immediately delete it. Do not click on any links or provide any sensitive information. The Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts will never place calls or send text messages to anyone soliciting payment by credit card, gift card, or any other means of electronic funds transfer for any reason.

New Distracted Driving Law in Effect June 5

Folks, remember to put the phone down when at the wheel! Starting June 5, it will be illegal to use a handheld cellphone and operate a vehicle in PA, even while stopped temporarily due to traffic, a red light, or other momentary delay.

For the first 12 months, drivers stopped by police will be issued a written warning, but effective June 5, 2026, the penalty is a summary offense with a $50 fine, plus court costs and other fees.

Women's Health Survey

May was Women’s Health Month, so to better understand the challenges women face in using these benefits, a number of state departments have launched a new survey, with the goal of hearing directly from women in PA about obstacles they face when accessing free preventive services like regular check-ups, screenings, and pregnancy care.

This is a great opportunity to share your experiences and help improve healthcare access for all women in the Commonwealth. The survey is open until July 7.

New PA License Plates

You now have the opportunity to request one of the brand-new PA license plates (shown above). If you are interested, please send this form to PennDOT along with a check or money order for $13. Forms are also available for pickup at my office.

Plates are available for standard vehicles and trucks, including personalized plates. If you have a specialty plate, such as a military, special fund, or organization plate, switching to the new plate will replace it with a standard plate.
