Guzman to host PA House leadership in Reading

Focus of the visit is to raise awareness about the need to save schools in Berks County

READING, July 28 – State Rep. Manny Guzman, D-Berks, announced today that he will host a tour with members of the Pennsylvania House leadership team and the House Majority Policy Committee in his legislative district. The tour, planned for Tuesday, Aug. 1, is aimed at raising awareness about critical issues threatening education in the region.

The Policy Committee and House leadership will tour school facilities in Reading and speak to residents and officials on the urgency for funding schools equitably. This visit will be the second stop of a statewide Policy Committee tour focused on education.

The group will tour Reading Senior High School, 801 N. 13th St., starting at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1. A rally to protect schools will follow at noon at Reading High.

“Senate Republican leadership is delaying the bill and playing politics instead of doing their job,” Guzman added. “These games have a damaging on impact brown, Black, and poor white kids in Reading and in Berks County,” he said.

“I eagerly await this visit as it will help us alert the community of our ongoing efforts to allocate fair funding for our schools in the spending plan and all the challenges that we are facing to deliver for our students.

“Republicans have methodically relegated our historically underfunded public schools. Enough is enough; we must break this shameful cycle,” Guzman said.

The House passed its initial 2023-24 spending plan on June 5. The budget included a significant increase in funding for our public education system, however the current budget bill, now simply awaiting a Senate signature before it can be sent to the governor, reduces the original investment approved by the House majority.
