Celebrating America’s 250th: Updates from Harrisburg & Home

Dear Friends,

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Independence Day and celebrated America’s 250th surrounded by loved ones. During this time, the Montgomery County Delegation took a moment to reflect on the words that started it all.

The Declaration of Independence reminds us that our nation was built on bold ideas, brave voices, and the belief that freedom and democracy are worth protecting. Nearly 250 years later, those words still challenge us to keep working toward a more perfect union for every American.

I am proud to join my Montco colleagues in honoring where we began and recommitting ourselves to the promise of what America can still become.

I return to Harrisburg this weekend to hopefully finalize this year’s budget, and I hope to be able to take the next few weeks to break down all that it includes for you. In the meantime, there are always so many busy and meaningful days—both in the district and at the Capitol—filled with policy work, community advocacy, and moments of fun with amazing visitors, and I’d like to share some of them with you now.

I joined my colleagues for a Policy Committee hearing focused on protecting taxpayer-funded programs and ensuring public dollars are used responsibly. Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh and Pennsylvania Office of State Inspector General Michelle Henry shared how the state's fraud prevention system works to stop improper payments before they happen. This proactive approach has already saved the Commonwealth hundreds of millions of dollars.

The hearing was hosted by Representatives Gallagher and Dougherty, who both played an important role in passing the Pennsylvania False Claims Act. Their leadership, along with the testimony we heard, underscored why strong, commonsense tools are essential to prosecuting fraud, recovering taxpayer dollars, and protecting the programs that so many Pennsylvanians rely on.

I was also glad to welcome members of the Bucks Mont Collaborative to Harrisburg for their Day of Advocacy. Their visit built on the important conversations from the recent community breakfast hosted by the HealthSpark Foundation and focused on two key priorities for our region: expanding access to safe, affordable housing and strengthening behavioral health services.

Throughout the day, members of the collaborative met with legislators and partners to share what they are seeing in our communities, discuss ongoing challenges, and highlight practical solutions that can make a meaningful difference for residents. By bringing their expertise and firsthand experience directly to the Capitol, they helped ensure that the needs identified at the community level remain part of the statewide policy conversation.

And, of course, no Capitol update would be complete without a little Pennsylvania tradition. Punxsutawney Phil stopped by for a visit!

It is not every day that you get to meet Pennsylvania's most famous weather forecaster right here in Harrisburg. Whether he's predicting six more weeks of winter or an early spring, Phil always brings excitement, tradition, and Pennsylvania pride wherever he goes.

Only in Pennsylvania do we take our budget work, our history, and our groundhogs seriously.
