Cephas releases statement on enactment of Act 5 of 2023

The legislator was a driving force in getting the bill passed in the House

HARRISBURG, July 6 – State Rep. Morgan Cephas today offered the following statement in response to Gov. Josh Shapiro signing into law Act 5 of 2023, formerly SB262, amending the Maternal Mortality Review Act. Cephas formerly served as co-chair of the Women’s Health Caucus where she led the group’s efforts on improving health outcomes for pregnant and postpartum people in Pennsylvania and helped to secure over $25 million for statewide initiatives.

“I've been working for years to see action to improve Pennsylvania's disheartening rates of maternal mortality and morbidity,” Cephas said. “With Governor Shapiro signing Act 5, we'll finally see severe maternal morbidity complications categorized as a reportable event in the Maternal Mortality Review Committee's annual report. This data will help the Pennsylvania Department of Health continue its research on improving health outcomes for pregnant and post-partum individuals and allow us to better understand the issue. Pennsylvania families deserve our utmost attention and the finest health options available to preserve their health and the health of their babies.”
