Dear Neighbor,
As our annual state budget deadline approaches, I’m busy working with my colleagues in the House to deliver a balanced budget that will make tangible quality-of-life improvements for all Pennsylvanians.
But even through these long days at the Capitol, I’ve been able to make it back to the district to enjoy seeing familiar faces at events throughout our community. I’m pleased to share these updates with you all:
Supporting Transit for All Pennsylvanians
I joined Sen. Maria Collett and transit advocates at Lansdale Train Station on Wednesday to call for sustainable and equitable funding for SEPTA. In the face of a $213 million budget deficit, SEPTA will have to cut service by 45% and raise fares by >20% – including reduced service on the 96 bus and the elimination of the 132 bus that run through our district – if the Senate doesn’t approve the funding bill the House approved earlier this week.
SEPTA service is critical to the economic prosperity of our region, and even those of us who don’t rely on it for our daily commute benefit from the increased property values, reduced traffic congestion, and cleaner air made possible by our public transit system.
I’m committed to making sure SEPTA works for all of us, and that’s why I’ve joined my House colleagues in passing a comprehensive transit funding package so that SEPTA can continue moving us forward:
Public Transit Trust Fund Increase (H.B. 1364): This legislation would increase the portion of our existing state sales tax revenue that is set aside for public transit agencies like SEPTA, a move that would close the funding gap left by the expiration of Act 89 and Federal COVID-19 relief funds and allow SEPTA to keep moving >800,000 people daily while investing in maintenance and critical equipment upgrades.
It would also permit PA to issue bonds to finance road and bridge repairs, which help keep our transportation infrastructure safe for bother drivers and pedestrians.
