House Insurance Committee approves Krueger’s Contraceptive Access for All Act

HARRISBURG, May 8 – State Rep. Leanne Krueger, D-Delaware, announced that the PA House Insurance Committee on Wednesday approved her legislation (H.B. 1140) that would add state-level protections for contraceptive access in Pennsylvania.

“We continue to see policy proposals at the federal level that threaten the health and wellbeing of women throughout our nation, and I can’t stand by and watch that happen to the people of Pennsylvania,” said Krueger. “Contraception is health care, and for many it empowers them to decide if and when to become pregnant. Our state must ensure that anyone living in Pennsylvania who needs or wants contraception has access to it.”

House Bill 1140 would require all insurance policies available in Pennsylvania to cover all FDA-approved contraceptive medicines and devices, including all emergency and over-the-counter contraceptives. It also sets standards for ensuring patient confidentiality and leaves room for religious exemptions so long as the contraceptive is elective and not for treating a medical condition.

“House Bill 1140 passed out of the House last session with notable bipartisan support, and I’m calling on my colleagues in both the House and the Senate to join me this year in finally showing the women of Pennsylvania that their health, wellbeing and success matters to the Commonwealth,” said Krueger.

The bill now advances to the full House of Representatives for consideration.
