Health Care Workplace Violence Prevention Act passes PA House

HARRISBURG, May 6 – Legislation addressing workplace violence in the health care sector passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives today, announced the bill co-sponsors state Reps. Leanne Krueger and Bridget Kosierowski.

The bill would establish requirements to aid health care employers in preventing workplace violence and to provide for employee support and protection should they need to report potential threats or experience violence themselves.

“Workplace violence is more prevalent in the healthcare industry than in any other industry,” said Krueger, D-Delaware. “We have a duty to ensure healthcare workers – those who care for us when we are sick or injured – are afforded a safe, violence-free workplace. Our bill aims to do that.”

“Incidents of workplace violence reported by members of the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals jumped from 50 percent in 2021 to 66 percent in 2024,” said Kosierowski. D-Lackawanna. “It’s unacceptable and it’s preventable.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare workers accounted for 73 percent of all non-fatal workplace injuries and illnesses due to violence in 2018, the most recent year that data was collected.

The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
