An update on MIPC, our plate restoration event, and more

Dear neighbor,

I want to share an update on what’s happening both here in the district and in Harrisburg, along with a reminder about my upcoming License Plate Restoration Event this week and some important dates for the upcoming primary election.

License Plate Restoration Event – Thursday, May 7 | 4 PM – 6 PM

Is your Pennsylvania license plate faded, peeling, or hard to read?

I am teaming up with Rep. David Delloso and Sen. Tim Kearney to help you get a free replacement license plate at the Ridley Township Municipal Building. Please give my office a call to make sure you have the required PennDOT form to bring with you.

Update on MIPC Tank Farm in Aston

I want to share a concerning update regarding the ongoing situation at the Monroe Energy/MIPC, LLC facility in Aston Township.

Last Friday night, I learned from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection that benzene vapor, a known carcinogen, was detected in the basement of a home next to the MIPC facility in Bethel Township. I am deeply concerned and I know many in our community have questions about what this means for their health and safety. In an effort to make sure that nearby residents got the news quickly and could access testing and health resources, I posted on our social media channels and reached out to local reporters. Joe Holden from CBS and Kathleen Carey from the Delaware County Times both reported on the situation after I spoke with them.

This situation began in December 2025, when we first learned of a leak of up to 9,000 barrels of gasoline at the facility. Since then, state and federal agencies, including the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, have been actively engaged in oversight, testing, and cleanup efforts.

More recently, testing has identified air quality concerns inside nearby homes. I am continuing to press for urgent action to ensure impacted residents are connected to the proper resources, that thorough testing is conducted, and that appropriate mitigation steps are taken quickly and transparently. I have also asked the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to hold the company accountable.

Concerned residents, especially if you have a private well, can reach out to:

  • MIPC hotline for testing: 610-364-8426
  • DEP Complaint line: 866-255-5158
  • PADOH for health concerns: 717-787-3350

Below is the latest statement from MIPC, LLC regarding this situation.

At the Capitol

Aston Family Visits Harrisburg for Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Day in Pennsylvania

Yesterday, I was proud to sponsor House Resolution 470, designating May 15, 2026 as Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Day in Pennsylvania and happy to share that the resolution passed the House.

This is another example of how local advocacy leads to action in Harrisburg. Last year, Aston resident Jessica Kempa and her daughter Kaia Harmon came to meet with me to educate me about a rare disease called Prader-Willi Syndrome. Kaia is one of at least 850 Pennsylvanians who have been diagnosed with this rare disease.

Jessica Kempa is the President of the new Prader-Willi Alliance of Pennsylvania, and she asked me to introduce this resolution to build awareness of this rare disease. On Tuesday, Jessica, Kaia, and parent advocate Cindy Szapacs joined me at the Capitol to watch as we voted on this resolution.

Prader-Willi syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by an abnormality on the 15th chromosome. Raising awareness is an important step in supporting individuals and families, and in promoting greater understanding across our communities.

Thank you to Jessica, Kaia, and Cindy for their advocacy!

Standing up for animal protection in Pennsylvania

Yesterday, Humane World for Animals was at the Capitol with advocates from across PA to advocate for several important pieces of legislation that are top priorities from the Animal Protection Caucus, including Victoria’s Law to stop the sale of puppy mill dogs in pet stores, ending pigeon shoots, and banning cat declawing. They also highlighted my legislation, HB 994 which would protect endangered animals by restricting the sale of imperiled species. I’m proud that this legislation passed the House in June 2025 with bipartisan support and it has been pending in the Senate for almost a year.

I was also honored to receive the Pennsylvania Humane Leadership Award from Humane World for Animals alongside my colleague Rep. Joe Hohenstein, recognizing our commitment to advancing animal protection efforts here in Pennsylvania.

PSBA Advocacy Day in Harrisburg

Yesterday, I was proud to take part in the Pennsylvania School Boards Association Advocacy Day in Harrisburg. I had the opportunity to meet with school board members from the Chester Upland School District, Khalif Polk and Dr. Tasliym Morales, as well as Mary Jo Witkowski-Smith from the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District.

It was a great opportunity to connect directly with local school directors and have meaningful conversations about the challenges and priorities facing our public schools. We talked about capital projects in both districts and pending legislation affecting public schools.

I’m grateful to these local elected officials for their advocacy and for the work they do every day to support students and families!

In the District

Making a difference together

Last Thursday, I hosted a community blood drive and was proud to donate alongside so many generous neighbors. We had a great turnout! Thank you to everyone who came out to give back.

I’m especially grateful to the volunteers who made this possible, the American Red Cross for their partnership, and the Aston Township Police Department for stopping by with coffee and donuts for our donors and team.

Celebrating Community at Middletown Community Day

On Saturday, I attended Middletown Community Day, and it was a great day in the community. I had the opportunity to spend time with my colleague Rep. Lisa Borowski, as well as meet with community leaders, first responders, local vendors, and neighbors.

It was wonderful to see so many people come together to celebrate and support one another.

Aston-Middletown Little League Home Run Derby

This Sunday, I was happy to join Aston Middletown Little League for their Home Run Derby. It was a fun, high-energy event with lots of excitement. There was even a special appearance from the Phillie Phanatic! Good thing I came prepared with my Phillie Phanatic shoes.

Last year, I supported a grant to help Aston Middletown Little League repave their parking lot. They leveraged that grant to raise money for additional field work, and it was great to see the improvements they have been able to make over the past year. It was a great day filled with community spirit, and I always enjoy being invited to events like this. It’s a wonderful way to connect with families, support our athletes, and celebrate the volunteers who make little leagues possible.
