A word about the political violence in Minnesota this weekend, legislative updates from Harrisburg, and more

Hi Neighbor,

This Saturday in Minnesota, State Representative and Democratic Leader Melissa Hortman was assassinated, her husband was murdered, and State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times in a targeted act of political violence. While the alleged gunman was taken into custody late Sunday after the largest manhunt in Minnesota’s history, law enforcement in MN has reported that he visited the homes of at least two other lawmakers and had a list of at least 70 other people on a target list.

It is a sobering time to be a state legislator – I had met Leader Hortman multiple times over the years at national conferences and respected her legislative work. Yesterday on the PA House floor, we held a moment of silence to honor the legislators, with Speaker McClinton, Majority Leader Matt Bradford and Minority Leader Jesse Topper all speaking passionately to denounce the attacks.

A constituent alerted me to conspiracy theories being spread about the attack. Here is a story from a local reporter from a credible local newspaper in Minnesota debunking the conspiracy theories: Fact check: Did Vance Boelter have close ties to Gov. Tim Walz? No.

I am grateful that the alleged gunman is in custody and pray for swift justice for the victims. I am also grateful for the local law enforcement that protect us at home and at the Capitol.

IN THE CAPITOL

PA House Raises the Minimum Wage

Last week, my House colleagues and I passed HB 1549, which raises the minimum wage to at least $12 throughout Pennsylvania by 2029. Here in Delaware County, the minimum wage would jump to $12 an hour starting January 1, 2026, and rise to $15 an hour by 2028. The bill creates a phased, tiered system of increasing the wage based on the cost of living in each county.

I voted to raise the wage because I value the hard work that our lowest-paid workers do each and every day, and because I know families can’t make ends meet if we don’t pay them a fair, livable wage. The bill now goes to the PA Senate, where I hope my peers push this legislation forward for all our communities.

Support Funding for Public Transit? Tell Your Senators Now.

Mass transit in Pennsylvania is facing a critical funding crisis that will have negative impacts in every region across our state – including right here in Delaware County. That’s why I voted to make sure everyone is able to get to where they need to go safely and efficiently.

Even if you don’t ride public transit, transit affects you – funding transit means more money in our communities, more people on the job, and safer commutes for everyone. Join me and demand action from the PA Senate to fund mass transit across Pennsylvania!

Supporting Union Workers in Harrisburg

Last Tuesday I took to the steps of the Capitol building alongside members of several different PA unions advocating for jobs and fair wages. I believe that all workers should be valued and stand with these unions in their pursuit of better working conditions, better pay, and better respect in the workplace.

Meetings with Union Members

While in Harrisburg last week, I had the opportunity to meet with members of SEIU Local 668, SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, and the United Steelworkers, including workers at Monroe Refinery in Delaware County. They came to the Capitol to advocate for legislation and funding that supports workers, families, and ensures the delivery of vital services they provide.

PA MOMNIBUS Day 2025

Yesterday was MOMNIBUS Day in the Capitol, a day of advocacy for the bills my colleagues and I in the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus have introduced and supported this year. I joined my colleagues at a rally to highlight the bills we’re running, which address the high rates of Black maternal morbidity and mortality in PA and create a safer environment for all moms. You can read more about the MOMNIBUS 2.0 package here.

Delco Delegation Supports the Delaware County Police Memorial Expansion

Last week I joined members of the Delaware County Legislative Delegation at Rose Tree Park to present a $150,000 check to expand the Delaware County Police Memorial. This grant, backed by the full Delco delegation, will help ensure that the memorial continues to honor the service and sacrifice of local law enforcement. This project reflects our continued dedication to honoring those who serve and protecting the legacy of law enforcement in our communities.
