Vince Hughes, D-Montgomery/Phila., were able to help secure $500,000 in state funds to assist Roxborough High School with security enhancements. This funding comes on the heels of the mass shooting last week following a junior varsity football scrimmage that took the life of one student and left four others injured. Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency: Regional Policing Assistance Program Who May Apply: Applicants for the Regional Policing Assistance Program may be any municipality – a city, borough, township, home-rule municipality, or county. Applicants may also be a public or quasi-public body, or its representative, duly authorized to act on behalf of one or more municipalities. All applications must be accompanied by fully executed Articles of Agreement or an Intergovernmental Agreement that establishes a Regional Police Department. HARRISBURG, Sept. 15 – September is Suicide Prevention Month, and State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., is calling on the Pennsylvania legislature to pass legislation addressing mental health and suicide prevention. “Too many people are struggling with their mental health across the commonwealth, and I fear that we are not doing enough in the legislature to address it,” Kenyatta said. “We need to pass legislation and provide more resources to help those who are suffering with a mental health crisis.” Kenyatta has introduced legislation -- called “ Phillip’s Law ” -- to address mental health in students. PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 18 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., today responded to what he says is troubling data from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health’s database on Monkeypox cases and vaccine distribution. The first published data set shows that nearly 90% of the cases in Philadelphia identify as cisgender male, nearly 50% of cases are between the ages of 30 and 39, and more than twice as many cases report race as Black or African American than White. More than 93% of vaccines have been administered to men, 43% of doses have been administered to residents between the ages of 30 and 39, and 58% of doses have been administered to people who report their race as White. Kenyatta describes these statistics as “troubling.” “When I spoke at a press conference about Monkeypox, I warned everybody that this virus can affect everybody,” Kenyatta said. “Now we are seeing that it is disproportionately affecting those most marginalized, such as Black and LGBTQIA+ communities. HARRISBURG, Aug. 16 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., praised the executive order Gov. Tom Wolf signed today to protect LGBTQIA+ Pennsylvanians from so-called conversion therapy. “The idea of conversion therapy is a misnomer; it is conversion abuse . This harmful practice is junk science and has not place in the commonwealth. Pennsylvania is better when it is fairer, and today’s order helps to move us in that direction, particularly for our LGBTQIA+ young people. I applaud Governor Wolf for signing this historic executive order to ban conversion abuse in Pennsylvania.” A survey on LGBTQIA+ Youth Mental Health by The Trevor Project shows that LGBTQIA+ youth are at increased risk for negative mental health outcomes. The survey results show that 45% of LGBTQIA+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year; 73% of LGBTQ youth reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety; and 58% reported symptoms of depression. Additionally, 36% of LGBTQ youth reported they have been physically threatened or harmed due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. “LGBTQIA+ individuals deserve to be treated with respect and dignity,” Kenyatta said. “As one of just three LGBTQIA+ members of the state legislature, I will continue to push for legislation such as the PA Fairness Act to protect LGBTQIA+ Pennsylvanians from discrimination and to codify the governor’s action today.” Wolf’s Executive Read more

HARRISBURG, July 8 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., praised the fact that homosexuality has been removed from the PA Crimes Code by the PA General Assembly. The bill now awaits the governor’s signature. “Removing homosexuality from the Crimes Code was about a couple centuries overdue, but a big deal nevertheless” Kenyatta said. “As one of three openly LGBTQ members of the General Assembly, I am happy that this is finally happening in Pennsylvania after a years-long fight.” Kenyatta continued, “It is my hope that this will be another step towards destigmatizing LGBTQ+ individuals and protecting the community from possible future court decisions.” “When Justice Thomas concurred in the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade he mentioned Lawrence v. Texas, which ruled that sodomy laws are unconstitutional, as a decision the court should overturn.
