Kenyatta offers scathing statement regarding removal of gun violence victims memorial

(May 05, 2025)

State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta today rebuked the removal of the Faces of Gun Violence memorial located at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives by the U.S. Department of Justice with the following statement: “When you walk into my district office you will see the walls are lined with stunning portraits of souls we lost to the crisis of gun violence. It’s a daily reminder of why I do this work. “Trump’s gutless decision to tear down a memorial honoring students who were murdered in school shootings isn’t just offensive -- it’s obscene -- it’s f***ing disgusting. “It sends one chilling, unmistakable message to grieving families: Republicans don’t want to prevent future tragedies. They don’t want to talk about common-sense gun laws. And worst of all—they don’t want to hear from the people whose lives have been shattered by their cowardice. “They want us to forget the children who never made it to graduation, forget the teachers who died protecting their students, forget the empty chairs, the unopened birthday gifts, the lives stolen by bullets that never should’ve been fired. “They’ll wrap themselves in the Second Amendment while cheering on a president who tramples every other right Americans hold dear. The hypocrisy is as staggering as it is dangerous. “Here in Pennsylvania, House Democrats have Read more

Kenyatta’s statement on antisemitic incident

(May 05, 2025)

State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta released the following statement after a student from Temple University, his alma mater, was placed on interim suspension from the university over an antisemitic incident at Barstool Sports Bar in Center City on Saturday: “As the state representative for Temple University and the surrounding community, I am horrified and outraged by the alleged antisemitic attack tied to a student. “Temple sits in the heart of a diverse and vibrant district — and there’s no place here for hate of any kind. This incident is not just a violation of community standards; it’s an affront to our shared humanity. “Antisemitism, like all bigotry, fuels violence and division. We cannot let it fester. We must call it out, confront it head-on, and work to build a city — and a campus — where every person is safe, valued and respected.” Read more

Kenyatta joins Legislators for a Guaranteed Income

(May 01, 2025)

State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta has joined 23 other legislators from 17 states as part of Legislators for a Guaranteed Income, a major national effort, to reaffirm his commitment to advancing bold, people-first policies that promote economic equity and close the growing gap between the ultra-wealthy and working families. This newly expanded network -- building on the work of mayors and county officials --has already launched 72 pilot programs delivering over $335 million in direct economic relief to families across the country. “Poverty is the moral and economic issue of our lifetime,” said Kenyatta. “And too often, it’s treated like a personal failure instead of a policy choice. We have the resources -- we just haven’t had the political will. Basic income flips that script.” Kenyatta, who has long championed guaranteed income policies, emphasized that millions of Pennsylvanians work full-time jobs -- or multiple jobs -- and still struggle to cover necessities like rent, groceries and childcare. “Living paycheck to paycheck is not a character flaw. It’s the byproduct of rigged systems that reward billionaires while families fight to survive,” Kenyatta said. “A guaranteed income is not just about stability—it’s a tool to make the economy work for working people again. “At a time when federal programs are getting slashed while tax breaks for Read more

Kenyatta’s statement on the passing of Pope Francis

(Apr 21, 2025)

After the Vatican announced the passing of Pope Francis during the morning hours of Easter Monday, state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta released the below statement: “This is a tremendous loss for the Church and for the world,” Kenyatta said. “He led with humility, spoke with moral courage and never stopped reminding us of our obligation to care for ‘the least of these.’ “I still remember seeing him on the Parkway during his first visit to Philadelphia—standing among thousands, I felt the weight and wonder of that moment. It’s a memory that’s stayed with me. “During that same trip, he signed a mural made in his honor on the back of St. Malachy School—right in the heart of my legislative district. A small act, but a lasting symbol of his reach and resonance. “May he rest in power—and may we carry forward his call to serve, to love, and to lift up those who’ve been pushed to the margins.” Read more

Kenyatta responds to SEPTA’s fare increases and service cuts

(Apr 11, 2025)

State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta today released this statement after the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority announced a series of unprecedented service cuts and fare increases. “These service cuts and fare increases will drastically impact all Southeastern Pennsylvania and the sad part is – it was totally avoidable,” Kenyatta said. “Last legislative session, I voted with House Democrats three times to pass legislation that would fund public transit, and each time Senate Republicans failed to bring it up for a vote. “By refusing to fund public transit, on three separate occasions, they have robbed hardworking Pennsylvanians of their livelihood. Nine out of every 10 riders on public transit are headed to work or school. “We must address this now, enough with the political games. It’s time for action and results.” Read more

Rep. Kenyatta, Policy Committee examine chaotic federal maneuvers

(Apr 02, 2025)

“Thousands of Pennsylvania workers have had their lives turned upside down, and the loss of the critical services they provide will have devastating consequences for Pennsylvania,” Kenyatta said. “DOGE continues to try and hide its many errors through dishonest and messaging about what it’s doing to eliminate ‘fraud.’ What they are really doing is trying to find any way to slide billionaires more tax cuts at the expense of working people.” Read more

Kenyatta excited by Gov. Shapiro’s proposals in 25-26 Budget Address

(Feb 05, 2025)

Today, state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta release the following statement in support of Gov. Josh Shapiro’s 2025-2026 state budget proposal. “I was honored to listen to Gov. Shapiro’s budget proposal, one that instills hope and excitement for progress in the commonwealth,” Kenyatta said. “It calls for us to promote equity by prioritizing education funding, so every student has resources and opportunities to follow their own path for a better future, whether that’s a four-year college or trade school, it sets them up for a lifetime of success. “The governor’s proposal to legalize adult-use cannabis will create more than a billion dollars in revenue that we can reinvest into the commonwealth. More importantly, we will ensure that it’s done with restorative justice to marginalized communities by expunging criminal marijuana offenses and helping minority owned licensed cannabis growers to profit from this booming industry. “We cannot in good conscious move forward with adult-use cannabis legislation without fixing the devastation that marginalized communities faced during the failed War on Drugs. “Workers throughout the commonwealth are financially struggling because of soaring prices and stagnant wages. We should help ease their burden any way we can. Let’s start providing options for affordable child and dependent care because people thrive when they have options, which builds up our state in Read more
