Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., release the following statement after a violent weekend in North Philadelphia’s Hartranft neighborhood: “Once again, what should have been a joyful community celebration in Hartranft ended in tragedy, and my heart is heavy. Too many lives in our city have been cut short by gun violence, leaving families and neighborhoods mourning. As someone who calls North Philly home, I’ve seen both the strength of our communities, and the deep pain violence leaves behind. While we’ve made progress, we can’t be satisfied. There’s still so much work to do to ensure safety for everyone. “We must care for each other. When conflict arises, we must meet it with empathy and understanding—not with violence. Too often, social media turns small disagreements into something much bigger. We are stronger than that, and violence cannot be the way we respond. “I’m thinking of those injured over the weekend and sending my deepest wishes for their recovery, both physically and emotionally. HARRISBURG, Sept. 26 – With political violence on the rise and Election Day near, state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., is urging his colleagues to support legislation that would give Pennsylvania candidates more flexibility to hire personal security details and feel safer at public events. “From the shooting of former United States Representative Gabby Giffords in 2011 to the assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump this year in Pennsylvania and Florida, security threats to political candidates and public officeholders have only increased and have been targeted at Democrats and Republicans alike,” Kenyatta said. “Violence and intimidation should have absolutely no place in our politics. The increase in threats against elected leaders and candidates is an unacceptable attack on the very foundation of our democracy. It endangers lives, undermines the democratic process, and threatens the free and fair functioning of government at every level. We must confront this growing crisis with urgency.” This week the U.S. House and Senate unanimously voted to increase security for presidential candidates. And in April, the Federal Election Commission proposed a rule to allow federal candidates and officeholders to use campaign funds for security purposes. PBM reform legislation heads to Gov. Shapiro’s desk

A bill supported by state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta that would help smaller, local pharmacies stay in business while driving down medication prices for consumers is heading to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s desk for his signature. Kenyatta was a co-sponsor on of state Rep. Jessican Benham’s bill to save community pharmacies and lower prescription drug costs by reforming pharmacy benefit manager policies in Pennsylvania. “I will always support legislation that helps us refocus on small local businesses instead of huge national corporations,” Kenyatta said. “This bill does that by keeping the pharmacies in control of their business practices instead of arbitrary rules set in place by pharmacy benefit managers.” Once signed into law, H.B. 1993 will limit or ban specific PBM practices, including spread pricing, patient steering, retroactive recoupment of money paid by the PBM to the pharmacy, and forcing prescriptions to be ordered by mail. The bill has passed the state House and Senate and now heads to the governor’s desk for his signature. Read more

Solomon, Kenyatta urge colleagues to vote to hold elected officials accountable

State Reps. Jared Solomon and Malcolm Kenyatta, both D-Phila., stood together once again at the Pennsylvania State Capitol to demand accountability in government by advocating for their legislation, H.B. 485, to require elected officials in Pennsylvania convicted of a crime to resign upon conviction. “There’s an important distinction that needs to be addressed,” Solomon said. “A conviction should mean immediate resignation, not waiting for the appellate process to play out before we allow a convicted felon take any form of office.” The lawmakers introduced the legislation in previous years but said the recent conviction of former President Donald Trump on 34 felonies is a chance to call on their colleagues to set an example of integrity by voting for this legislation. Solomon and Kenyatta said that H.B. 485 is just one part of their packaged “Good Government” legislation written to help restore faith and trust and reduce skepticism amongst the general public. “We have a unique chance to restore hope in our democracy and show that anyone convicted of a felonious crime has no place in the Pennsylvania statehouse or any other level of government,” Kenyatta said. “When we are lucky enough to win elections, it means that the people have put their faith in us and expect us to uphold that to the highest standards; it’s time we honor that responsibility.” Read more

Philadelphia House Delegation leadership reacts to PSP trooper now off force

PHILADELPHIA, May 10 – Members of the Philadelphia House Delegation today said they were grateful to the Pennsylvania State Police for conducting a thorough investigation into the State Police traffic stop and arrest of Celena Morrison and Darius McLean on I-76 in March and reiterated the need for transparency in community policing. The unnamed PSP trooper involved in the incident was placed on administrative leave two months ago pending an internal investigation and is now no longer employed with the State Police, according to a PSP spokesperson. Delegation Chair Morgan Cephas said that while the investigation likely remains ongoing, she is grateful that Pennsylvania State Police officials took the matter seriously and handled the matter swiftly and professionally. "As chair of the delegation, I'm glad that the State Police have heard our concerns and took the time to hold a fair and impartial internal investigation into this matter, which has led to the officer involved no longer being employed by them,” Cephas said. “I also commend the State Police for speeding up their commitment to make sure all officers working in Philadelphia have active body cameras.
