Scott announces $1.3 million in grants to revitalize, improve safety in Norristown

NORRISTOWN, Dec. 18 – State Rep. Greg Scott, D-Montgomery, today announced an infusion of $1.3 million in funds from the Statewide Local Share Account to support revitalization and community safety projects throughout Norristown.

Scott, a lifelong native of Norristown, is an advocate for projects that bring communities together and support the health and safety of all residents. Of the five projects in Norristown receiving LSA funds, Scott directly supported two:

  • $400,000 to Norristown Municipality to construct a new community center with a public swimming pool.
  • $167,148 to Norristown Municipality to purchase two crime prevention surveillance trailers to enhance law enforcement intelligence in the wake of rising incidences of murder in the borough.

“Norristown is the second most populated borough in Pennsylvania, and despite being a historically underserved area, we’ve seen a lot of recent growth and the construction of new housing developments,” said Scott. “Building a new community center and public pool will foster the community I have always found here in Norristown, for people who’ve lived here long term and those we’ll welcome as new residents. At the same time, we’ve seen a rise in serious crime; ensuring our law enforcement officers have top-of-the-line equipment is also key to a thriving community.”

In addition to these grants, Scott also said the following projects were funded by the LSA:

  • $86,884 to the Montgomery County Redevelopment Authority to purchase a new cargo van and equipment for Expressive Path Inc., a mobile art and music program for students in Norristown Borough.
  • $528,000 to Norristown Municipality to address flooding on Hamilton Street in Norristown.
  • $138,720 to Norristown Municipality to conduct an analysis of how affordable housing is distributed across Montgomery County.

These grants are funded by the Statewide Local Share Account, which is funded from the PA Race Horse Development Gaming Act.

A final grant in the district is funded by the Act 13 Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program, which supports projects involving the development, rehabilitation and improvement of public parks, recreation areas, greenways, trails and river conservation:

  • $30,000 to Plymouth Township for improvements to the Cardinal View Stormwater Basin.
