Neilson bill for online insurance verification expected to be signed by Gov. Shapiro

HARRISBURG, Feb. 6 – Legislation sponsored by state Rep. Ed Neilson, chair of the House Transportation Committee, requiring PennDOT to create an online system to verify vehicle insurance coverage is expected to be signed into law by Gov. Josh Shapiro next week.

“Under the current, antiquated system, there are too many opportunities for drivers to miss a PennDOT notice about a lapse in insurance, because they must wait to receive a letter and then respond with proof of coverage,” Neilson said.

“Too often, drivers don’t realize their insurance has lapsed until they are pulled over by law enforcement, which can lead to additional penalties. I’m grateful that Gov. Shapiro is expected to sign this bill, which will save taxpayers both time and money.”

Once signed, the legislation will allow PennDOT and law enforcement to electronically verify a driver’s insurance status directly with insurers, eliminating the need to send physical letters to vehicle owners who may have moved or misunderstood the notice—issues that can result in unnecessary driver’s license suspensions.
