HARRISBURG, June 18 – State Reps. Jim Prokopiak and Nancy Guenst have introduced critical legislation aimed at addressing the growing housing affordability crisis in Pennsylvania. The bill is one of several initiatives being offered by the PA House Democratic Caucus to mitigate the rising cost of housing and provide relief to both renters and prospective homebuyers across the state. In Pennsylvania, over 43% of renters are considered rent-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their monthly income on rent. The consequences of this financial strain can be devastating, including an increased risk of eviction, reduced access to health care, and negative developmental impacts on children raised in such households. "As legislators, we have a duty to protect the wellbeing of our constituents, and that includes ensuring they have access to affordable housing,” Prokopiak said. “This legislation will provide critical protections by instituting reasonable limits on rent increases, ensuring they don’t outpace inflation or wage growth. It’s time for Pennsylvania to take action and adopt solutions that help make our state a more affordable place to live." “As housing costs continue to climb, many Pennsylvanians are being priced out of their homes, and that is unacceptable,” Guenst said. “This bill is about fairness and stability, offering a practical solution that Read more

In Harrisburg last week, two important pieces of legislation passed the House and will be moving on for consideration in the Senate. The first bill is House Bill 308, which will protect ALL workers, both private and public. Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) protections were established under President Richard Nixon and since then many lives have been saved, injuries prevented, and corporate profits are higher than they’ve been in our history. Many legislators have been asked by constituents to officiate their marriage ceremonies. However, Pennsylvania does not include state legislators among public officials who may perform civil marriage ceremonies. Along with Rep. Ben Sanchez and Rep. Melissa Cerrato – we are circulating legislation that would allow members of the General Assembly to officiate marriages in PA. The proposal will apply to current members if they register with the Chief Clerk.By allowing members of the General Assembly to officiate marriages, we will allow couples in PA to have one more option for how they would like to conduct their marriages. As a member of the PA House Game & Fisheries Committee and an avid angler herself, Pa. state Rep. Nancy Guenst knows how important trout fishing is across the commonwealth. Guenst joined Fish & Boat Commission conservation officers and volunteers to stock trout in the Pennypack Creek. Every year the PFBC raises 3.2 million trout in its statewide hatchery system. Trout season officially opens April 5, but kids can get an early start on Mentored Youth Trout Day, March 29. Funds from the purchase of fishing licenses pay for stocking and all trout stocking events are open to the public. There are hundreds of sporting goods and bait and tackle shops across Pa. where you can purchase a license or go to www.fishandboat.com to buy online and check out stocking schedules. Read more
