Rep. Tina Davis: The Pa Rescue Plan protects our seniors

(May 03, 2021)

You shouldn’t have to work until you die. You should know there will come a time where you can take off those work shoes – boots, heels, sneakers or whatever – and put your feet up for a well-earned break. But, in today’s America, only about two-thirds of workers have access to any kind of a retirement plan. In today’s America only half of workers have access to nothing but 401(k) plans. The Pennsylvanian who invented the 401(k) created them to supplement a pension, not be a retired worker’s only support beyond Social Security. Except almost nobody has a pension anymore – just a 401(k) account that doesn’t seem to get any bigger while billionaires get richer every day. So, instead of retirement we see what are supposed to be “heartwarming” stories about people who should be taking a well-deserved rest forced back on the job, a 79-year-old and a 19-year-old wearing the same uniform and sharing a shift. Or we hear stories about seniors cutting pills in half to stretch their supply, and seniors forced to sell their homes because they can’t afford their property taxes, or because they need health care. It’s not right. We need to do better. The Pa Rescue Plan would help. Pennsylvania is getting billions of dollars from the federal government. This money isn’t supposed to be hidden away for a rainy day. COVID-19 is the worst “storm” we’ve faced in more than a century, and Read more

PA House Democrats Launch Effort to Defend Democracy

(Mar 29, 2021)

HARRISBURG, March 29 – Responding to the Capitol insurrection in January and the signing of new restrictions on voting rights last week in Georgia, House Democrats are taking action to protect American democracy. Today, a website was launched that summarizes policy proposals to defend democracy as well as links to more information and the ability for people to quickly email their elected officials, noting their support of the bills. The House Democratic Caucus has been working on these proposals since a House Democratic Policy Committee Hearing in January, when members were briefed by legal scholars, hate crimes experts and members of Congress on the language of false conspiracy and election fraud being used to undermine democracy. That same language has shifted from encouraging outright attack to what many perceive as insidiously undermining basic voting rights. “We cannot allow the outrage and disgust of the American people watching an armed invasion of our government to be subverted by a slick rebranding into attacks on our right to fair and free elections” Policy Committee Chairman Ryan Bizzarro said. Members of the House Democratic Caucus have introduced dozens of measures to expand voting rights, preserve election security, protect access to mail-in ballots and polling places, and to clarify and consolidate the often-outdated Election Code. Bizzarro said the site – www.pahouse.com/policy/defendingdemocracy -- will serve as a great Read more

House Democratic Leaders call on Republicans to honor promise to survivors of childhood sexual abuse

(Mar 19, 2021)

With time running out to provide a chance at justice for survivors of childhood sexual abuse through an emergency constitutional amendment, the House Democratic leadership team released the following statement calling on Republican leadership to commit to bringing the measure up for a vote on Monday:“In early February, Republican leadership made a public promise on the House floor to get an emergency constitutional amendment to the Senate and provide a chance at justice to the survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Due to their wavering and inaction this week, we’re now dangerously close to running out of time to get this in front of Pennsylvanians in the May Primary Election. Read more

Davis: The COVID-19 Hospitality Industry Recovery Program is a needed shot in the arm for our struggling local bars and restaurants

(Mar 03, 2021)

HARRISBURG, March 3 – A fervent advocate for state financial support of the Pennsylvanian hospitality industry battered by the pandemic, state Rep. Tina Davis, D-Bucks, applauded Gov. Tom Wolf ’s announcement Tuesday of the COVID-19 Hospitality Industry Recovery Program for offering financial relief to Pennsylvania’s bars and restaurants. “ I fought hard over the last year to pass legislation that would offer the kind of help to our hospitality industry that the COVID-19 Hospitality Industry Recovery Program promises to do,” Davis said. “Our bars and restaurants make up the backbone of our local economies, and they have struggled to survive for a year while keeping themselves, their staff and their patrons safe from a deadly virus. I’m very glad these mainstays of our communities will finally be getting the financial support they deserve.” The Hospitality Industry Recovery Program is the result of S.B. 109, which passed earlier this year and Wolf quickly signed into law. It directs $912 million in COVID-19 relief to restaurants, schools, employers, tenants and landlords. Last session, Davis was a prime co-sponsor of legislation aimed at providing financial support to bars and restaurants and supported other COVID-19 related pieces of legislation, many of which were incorporated into the program announced by Wolf on Tuesday. More information is available by contacting Davis’s Read more

House Democrats demand accountability for Republican election lies

(Jan 13, 2021)

Citing the dangerous lies spread by some Republicans in the General Assembly regarding the 2020 election, House Democratic leaders today released the following statement demanding accountability and responsibility as the nation moves forward:“What we saw last week was nothing short of an attempted coup, instigated not only by the president of the United States but by Republican enablers at all levels of government. Words matter, and the falsehoods, misrepresentations and seditious rantings we’ve heard from some Republican members of the General Assembly can’t go unchallenged. Our nation can’t heal without consequences for the first invasion of the United States Capitol since the War of 1812. Read more
