ERIE, Nov. 25 — Families and workers are struggling in today’s economy to afford basic needs, including housing. State Rep. Ryan Bizzarro announced state efforts to improve lives, awarding a grant of more than $70,000 to enhance housing affordability in Erie County.
“Out-of-control prices for everyday items continues to plague families and workers, and the cost of renting and buying a new home has skyrocketed,” said Bizzarro, who represents Fairview and Millcreek townships. “This grant will help us take a hard look at our local housing market and identify real solutions so more families and workers can achieve the American dream of homeownership.”
Erie County will receive $71,111 to update its comprehensive housing plan, highlighting solutions to increase affordable housing options, including the rehabilitation of older properties.
For years, Bizzarro has attempted to address the lack of affordable housing through legislation, championing the First-Time Homebuyers’ Savings Account bill. The measure, H.B. 818, passed the House in May.
Today’s grant is funded through the Department of Community and Economic Development and the state’s Municipal Assistance Program. It’s one of 18 projects, spread across 14 counties, with a total statewide investment of nearly $904,489.92 in Municipal Assistance Program funding. The full list of approved projects can be found here.
The grant announcement continues Bizzarro’s efforts to bring state investments back to the local community. So far this year, he has helped secure almost $18.7 million for local projects.
