Brian's Briefing for November 7: Honoring our veterans, SNAP and LIHEAP updates, and more

Dear Neighbors,

Tuesday is Veterans Day, and nationwide people will honor those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces with parades, flag raisings, and ceremonies.

As a veteran, I’m proud to see communities come together to show their gratitude for our past and present veteran neighbors. I can tell you firsthand that showing veterans that you understand and appreciate their sacrifices has a significant impact. Returning home after time in the service can be, for some veterans, a very lonely experience. Having a strong community rally around you – whether it’s your town, your family, your church, or your friends – can make that transition smoother.

In honor of Veterans Day, I ask you to share with the veterans you know that my office can connect them with programs designed to support them at home, whether they need financial support, mental or physical health services, or simply to connect with other veterans. You can find more information on my constituent services page or call us at (215) 323-6997.

If you’re able, I also encourage you to attend one of our district’s Veterans Day celebrations to show your support:

PECO & PGW halt shut offs during the federal government shutdown

LIHEAP benefits help approximately 300,000 Pennsylvanians stay warm each year. As the weather gets colder, right before the holidays, applications that were supposed to open on Nov. 3 have been delayed to Dec. 3, although that date is subject to change. The delay is caused by funding issues related to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The good news is that PECO and PGW have agreed to halt shut offs during the government shutdown which will keep many families warm until the shutdown ends.

If you or someone you know typically receives LIHEAP support, you should apply for the PGW and PECO customer assistance programs to avoid your heat-related utilities from being cut off for nonpayment.

  • PGW customers must be in the Customer Responsibility Program and can enroll by calling 215-235-1000.
  • PECO customers must be enrolled in the Customer Assistance Program and can call 1-800-774-7040 for help with their application.

Another SNAP Update

Last week two federal judges ordered that SNAP be funded throughout the federal shutdown, and the Trump administration agreed to partially fund it. Recipients were told to expect roughly 65% of what they usually receive. It’s not clear when payments will be loaded onto recipient EBT cards.

If you or someone you know needs food assistance, check out this list of Bucks County food pantries that can help.
