Brian's Briefing for October 24: SNAP and LIHEAP Updates

Dear Neighbor,

Two essential, federally funded support programs have announced a pause in their services due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, which is now in its 24th day.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it can’t release funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, during the shutdown. This means that in November, families who rely on SNAP for food assistance won’t receive their payments.

In addition, this Wednesday, the PA Department of Human Services announced that without its federal allocation of funds for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, it must delay the opening of this year’s LIHEAP season. It was supposed to open November 3; it will be delayed until December 3. LIHEAP helps low-income households pay for heating utilities throughout the winter months.

If you or someone you know need food assistance or heating assistance while these programs are stalled, the links below can help:

As always, my office is here to help in any way that we can. Please reach out to us at (215) 323-6997, by email at RepMunroe@pahouse.net, or by stopping by my office at 1410 West Street Road, Warminster, M-F from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Congratulations to our Newest Eagle Scout

This week I had the honor of presenting RJ Spruhde a House citation to commemorate reaching Eagle Scout. RJ is an exemplary young community member, leader, and neighbor. For his Eagle Scout project, he installed location markers throughout one of our county parks, to aid first responders in locating a person in need of emergency care. He is part of BSA Troop 133 of Chalfont.

Learning How to Avoid Scams

This week I hosted a senior scam event with the PA Office of the Attorney General at St. John Bosco’s in Warminster. Scammers are always finding new ways to get personal information that can lead to stolen identities and financial loss, and I was glad to see so many of you there to learn how to best avoid it.

Thank you to everyone who came, to St. John Bosco’s for the event space, and to the OAG for co-hosting!

As mentioned above, applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program will now open December 3. Learn more about LIHEAP here.
