October 24 email: Working Together to Strengthen Physical and Mental Health Care Across Pennsylvania

Dear Friends,

In recent weeks, I have had the privilege of participating in a series of hearings, meetings, and site visits focused on one of the most important responsibilities we share: protecting and improving the physical and mental health of Pennsylvanians. These conversations were not easy, but they were deeply necessary, and I want to share with you what we’ve learned and where we go from here.

We began by addressing the urgent issue of maternal and infant mortality across the Commonwealth. Families, medical professionals, and advocates provided powerful testimony, reminding us that too many communities are losing access to OB/GYN care, leaving expectant mothers without the support they need before, during, and after childbirth. This is not just a rural issue or an urban issue, it is a statewide crisis. Every Pennsylvanian deserves the chance to bring a child into the world safely and to raise that child with confidence that quality care is available. These hearings underscored the need for stronger investments in maternal health, expanded access to providers, and policies that close gaps in care.

I also participated in a hearing focused on expanding access to treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. Veterans, first responders, survivors, and medical experts shared their experiences with both traditional and innovative therapies. The message was clear: post-traumatic stress is an invisible wound that can be just as devastating as any physical injury, and we must do more to ensure compassionate and effective care is available. For me, this issue is personal, as I have loved ones who live with trauma. I am committed to advancing policies that expand treatment options, reduce stigma, and prioritize mental health as a core component of overall well-being.

Another critical discussion centered on the future of Pennie, Pennsylvania’s health insurance marketplace. Recent federal actions are projected to drive an 82 percent increase in costs for Pennie and raise insurance premiums across the state by nearly 19 percent. These changes would be devastating for families, both financially and in terms of access to care, while further straining hospitals and clinics that are already stretched thin. If left unaddressed, they could expand the number of healthcare deserts across the Commonwealth. I will continue to monitor this closely and share updates, but I also urge residents to make their voices heard with federal representatives. Affordable and accessible healthcare is not a luxury—it is a necessity.

Finally, I toured Norristown State Hospital with colleagues to see firsthand the state of mental health care in Pennsylvania. The dedication of the staff was inspiring, but the challenges they face were sobering. We observed progress in some areas, yet it is clear that serious gaps remain in access, staffing, and resources. Mental health is inseparable from physical health, and we must continue building a system that treats people with dignity, compassion, and the support they deserve.

Taken together, these hearings and meetings highlight a simple truth: the health of our communities depends on our willingness to confront difficult realities and work toward solutions. Whether it means ensuring safe births, supporting those living with trauma, protecting affordable healthcare, or strengthening mental health services, I remain committed to being part of the effort to build a healthier Pennsylvania.
