September 19 email: Patriots’ Day: A Legacy We Carry Forward

Dear Friends,

This past week, we came together once again to mark Patriots’ Day. Although the calendar has moved on, the meaning of this day should remain with us. It is not just a date to remember, but a call to reflect and recommit ourselves to the values that carried us through one of our darkest chapters.

I had the honor of joining our community for a heartfelt memorial celebration where the Hatboro-Horsham marching band performed a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. I was grateful for the opportunity to share a few moments discussing the significance of 9/11, a day that is etched into our collective memory.

Like many of you, I remember exactly where I was that morning. I was 19 years old, staying at a friend’s house, when her mother came upstairs and told me I needed to go home and be with my family. I didn’t know why, but I ran. When I stepped into the den, I found my mother watching the news, tears streaming down her face as the devastating events unfolded before us.

None of us will ever forget where we were that day. Because that day changed our country forever.

We remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on 9/11. We honor the first responders who ran toward danger, the passengers on Flight 93 who fought back, and the countless heroes who stepped forward in the face of unimaginable tragedy. Their courage and sacrifice live on, not just in our memories, but in the way we care for one another.

What stays with me most is what came after the tragedy: the way our country came together. Strangers became neighbors. Compassion became instinctive. The common good became our shared mission.

In the years since, it has become common to mark this day with acts of service, a living tribute to the unity and compassion that emerged from the darkness. In that same spirit, I was honored to participate in Mitzvah Circle’s 9/11 Week of Service. With the incredible support of AmeriCorps, volunteers came together to distribute essential supplies to families facing hardship. We loaded more than three thousand cases of diapers into the vehicles of Mitzvah’s partner agencies. It was a powerful reminder that even small acts, when done together, can make a profound difference.

Though I wish the tragedy of 9/11 had never happened, I hope we never lose that spirit of unity and service to one another. That is how we honor those we lost, by living with purpose, with empathy, and with a commitment to each other.

As we reflect on Patriots’ Day, let us remember that its legacy is not confined to a single moment or memorial. It lives in the choices we make, the kindness we show, and the ways we support one another. Let us continue to honor those we lost by living with purpose, by serving with heart, and by showing up for our communities every day. May we never forget, and we always carry forward the spirit of unity that rose from the ashes.
