Important SNAP updates, LIHEAP delay & upcoming election deadlines

An update on SNAP benefits

Washington, D.C., Republicans aren’t passing a federal budget, and due to their inaction and unwillingness to compromise, the federal government has shut down. Unfortunately, this has serious consequences for Pennsylvanians.

Beginning Nov. 1, SNAP benefits cannot be paid. SNAP funding comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which cannot release funds during the shutdown, meaning this pause will continue until the shutdown ends.

Take a moment to tell U.S. Senators John Fetterman and Dave McCormick to get back to work on funding food assistance.

If you currently receive SNAP, please continue to complete your renewals and report any changes to your income, contact information, or household members during the shutdown. Keeping your information up to date will help ensure your benefits can be processed as soon as funding resumes.

It’s time for our federal lawmakers to do the right thing and end the shutdown by passing a federal budget that funds vital programs like SNAP and Affordable Care Act subsidies.

New work requirements also go into effect on November 1. In September, the federal government updated the rules regarding eligibility and time limits, and Pennsylvania became ineligible to offer waivers by county or municipality.

SNAP recipients will still need to report on meeting the work requirements, which include working, volunteering, or participating in an education or training program for at least 20 hours per week. However, the reporting requirement will now apply to more recipients.

Being a veteran or a current or former foster youth no longer exempts you from work requirements.

I know these changes are worrisome and challenging. My team and I are always here to help. If you need assistance with your SNAP application, paperwork, or understanding these new changes, please don’t hesitate to visit my Clifton Heights office at 6 S. Springfield Road or call us at 484-200-1563.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program opening delayed

Because of the Republican-led government shutdown, Pennsylvania is being forced to delay LIHEAP—vital home-heating assistance for 300,000 families—by a full month. If you need help heating your home this winter, here's a list of utility companies' assistance programs: https://www.puc.pa.gov/about-the-puc/consumer-education/utility-assistance-programs/
