Passing another good faith budget to the Senate with a strong call for action

Passing another state budget

After 100 days of Senate Republicans putting politics ahead of people and refusing to negotiate in good faith on a state budget, we’ve had enough.

On Wednesday, I was proud to once again cast my vote for a state budget that demonstrates an ability to govern through thoughtful compromise.

The first bipartisan budget plan the House sent to the Senate (H.B. 1330) on July 14 was met with silence. On Wednesday, House Democrats again raised our voices and our votes, demanding that Senate leaders take this seriously.

And it is serious. Schools, counties, and organizations—like rape crisis centers and Head Start programs—are all feeling the effects of Senate inaction. Many have been forced to cut services or take out loans to cover expenses that should be paid for with state funding.

This isn’t just about politics, it’s about people. It’s about essential services, public schools, and community organizations that can’t wait any longer for the funding they rely on.

What the Senate is doing isn’t governing—it’s weakness.

Please join me in calling on Senate Republican leaders to end their political games and pass the House budget—one that funds schools and services, does not increase taxes, and is built on thoughtful compromise and a commitment to govern.

Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman and Appropriations Chair Scott Martin’s contact information can be found here, let’s urge them to act.

But passing the budget wasn’t all we did this week; we also passed bills this week designed to help you:

We’re protecting workers by allowing them to collect unemployment compensation benefits if their unemployment is due to a stoppage of work because of a labor dispute (HB 145).

We’re supporting safe school infrastructure by creating a school facilities inventory within the PA Department of Education (HB 1701).

And we’re modernizing our state liquor laws and supporting businesses by allowing businesses with liquor licenses to have premixed cocktails on tap, just like beer (HB 1702).

They are now moving to the Senate for consideration.

Turning the Capitol fountain pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

At the Capitol, we turn the fountain pink every October to raise awareness about breast cancer. Mammograms are the easiest and most effective way to detect breast cancer early and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the body.

I joined my colleagues on the House Floor wearing pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We also held an emotional press conference where both advocates and survivors alike shared their stories. They advocated for better access to care, for early detection, and for expanded research.

By raising awareness and promoting regular mammograms, we can—and will—save lives.

Revolutionary Reads on Oct. 15

To celebrate the birth of our nation, each year through 2026, the Revolutionary Reads committee chooses a book examining some aspect of the American Revolution era to be the Community Read.

This year the committee has chosen The Painter's Fire: A Forgotten History of the Artists Who Championed the American Revolution by Zara Anishanslin, my University of Delaware classmate and friend. I will join Zara on Wednesday, October 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Widener University to moderate a discussion between readers.

Zara’s book follows an unusual cohort of London-based artists—men and women, Black and white—who promoted the Patriot cause during the Revolutionary War, risking their livelihoods and reputations to defy the British Empire.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information and to register, visit https://www.delcolibraries.org/revolutionary-reads.
