Back in Harrisburg without a budget + Highlighting diaper need awareness

Back in Harrisburg without a budget

We are entering our fourth month without a state budget, which is hurting our schools, counties, and state services. The budget needs to be passed before our county government is forced to make tough decisions about whether some services will be reduced—or worse, stopped altogether.

Tell Senate Republican leadership that enough is enough: it’s time to pass a commonsense budget that provides fair funding for every Pennsylvanian.

In the meantime, we are still passing bills in the House. This week, we approved several important measures that will help our neighbors and strengthen our communities:

We protected consumers by requiring disclosure of flood-related risk factors during the homebuying process (HB 1704); requiring companies that collect personal information electronically to take steps to protect that data from breaches (HB 997); establishing the Landslide and Sinkhole Insurance Program (HB 589); and giving consumers rights when it comes to their personal data and requiring certain businesses to protect consumer privacy and limit the collection of consumer data (HB 78).

We’re also protecting communities by closing loopholes in our law to expand background checks for purchases of long guns (HB 1593).

Diaper Need Awareness Week

I attended a press conference on Monday to recognize National Diaper Need Awareness Week. As a mom myself, I am all too familiar with the need for an endless supply of diapers.

Reportedly, one in two U.S. families struggles to provide enough diapers to keep a baby or toddler clean, dry, and healthy.

For older adults, the need is just as urgent. Adult incontinence products can cost up to $1,000 annually and are not covered by Medicare or many private insurance plans. According to the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank, adult diapers cost nearly three times more than infant diapers, placing a significant strain on seniors with low or fixed incomes.

Clean diapers and undergarments should be considered a necessity—no child or adult should go without them. My office is accepting diaper donations to support families in need, and we’re also highlighting additional organizations that accept donations:

PennDOT is accepting proposals for projects to improve transportation in Pennsylvania

PennDOT is accepting unsolicited proposals for transportation projects from the private sector through October 31.

During this period, you may submit proposals that offer innovative approaches for delivering transportation projects across all modes, including roads, bridges, rail, aviation, and ports. Proposals may also include more efficient models for managing existing transportation-related services and programs.

If you’re interested in submitting a project proposal, head here.

Revolutionary Reads on Oct. 15

To celebrate the birth of our nation, each year through 2026, the Revolutionary Reads committee chooses a book examining some aspect of the American Revolution era to be the Community Read.

This year the committee has chosen The Painter's Fire: A Forgotten History of the Artists Who Championed the American Revolution by Zara Anishanslin, my University of Delaware classmate and friend. I will join Zara on Wednesday, October 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Widener University to moderate a discussion between readers.

Zara’s book follows an unusual cohort of London-based artists—men and women, Black and white—who promoted the Patriot cause during the Revolutionary War, risking their livelihoods and reputations to defy the British Empire.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information and to register, visit https://www.delcolibraries.org/revolutionary-reads.
