DMVA encourages us to reach out and check on the veterans in our lives

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and Pennsylvania’s Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is reminding everyone of the resources available for those in crisis or in need of additional support.

Veterans remain at an elevated risk of suicide — and one veteran suicide is one too many. The DMVA encourages everyone to reach out to the veterans in their lives and remind them that someone cares about and appreciates them, even if it has been a while since you last spoke.

If you are a veteran in crisis — or if you are concerned about one — free and confidential support is available 24/7. Call the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988, then press 1, or send a text message to 838255, or chat online

Another resource available to veterans facing challenging times is VETConnect, an outreach program that connects veterans and their families with local resources to meet their needs when it comes to finding a place to live, finding a job, getting mental health support, and more.

America250PA Now Accepting Applications for Semiquin Scholarship

To commemorate America’s 250th anniversary and honor Pennsylvania’s strong commitment to education, America250PA will be awarding $250,000 in scholarships to deserving Pennsylvania students attending in-state colleges next school year.

Any Pennsylvania high school senior who plans to attend a college or university in Pennsylvania for the 2026-27 academic year may apply. Twenty-five scholarships, totaling $10,000 each, will be awarded.

Applications are due January 31, 2026. More details, including matches by partner institutions, can be found here.

New SNAP reporting mandates

As of September 1, new federal rules under this summer’s federal budget bill passed by Congress now require certain SNAP recipients to report their work, education, training, or volunteer hours to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) to keep their benefits.

To guide you through these changes, the Shapiro Administration has created a one-stop resource at dhs.pa.gov/work. You’ll find who must comply, how to submit your hours, and information on possible exemptions.

These reporting requirements will expand further throughout fall 2025. If you’re affected, you should have received a letter, but even if you haven’t, please review the details on the DHS website.

If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact my office for assistance.
